Poured into Duvel tulip glass. Look is a pleasant orange copper. Nice two finger tan head, nice retaining lace on glass. Nose is more malt than citrus or pine. Taste is malty balanced with great hops and more malty aftertaste. Overall a really nice amber ale - one of my favorite ambers - a very nice diversion from the IPA's I normally imbide.

12 oz. Bottle
Best By: 05/30/18

Poured into a DFH glass a pretty nice clean/clear dark reddish/amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy one-finger off-white head, which also leaves some pretty nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, with a nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit), slight pine. The taste is pretty nice, hoppy, malty, with a nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine, grapefruit), piney. Medium body, ABV is hidden nicely, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, a pretty tasty brew from Deschutes.

Poured from a bottle into a glass.

This is a mighty fine red ale, especially if you are ina more hoppy mood.

Pours is cloudy orange amber. Nice head and lacing. A bright hop aroma with a sweet caramel undertone. A touch of alcohol and fruitiness. Taste has a palatable hop bitterness upfront with a caramel malt character, sweet dried apricots, and fruity tea. Medium body.

Massive billowy head on an amber body. The head reduces relatively quickly and leaves lotsa lacing.

Flavors are bright citrus hops and sweet malts and rinds and pines. Mouthfeel is medium; not too thick but substantial.

Very very good.

Picked up a single from TW Arrowhead 4-21-17 for $2.79. Best by 6-27-17 but stored in the cold fridge since purchase.

Beer poured deep amber with a gorgeous white head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is light citrus and floral hops..

Taste is well balanced between the caramel malt base and the floral and citrus hops.

Mouthfeel is refreshing and lively on the palate.

Overall a nice red hoppy ale that is worth a second look!

Best by date of 10/13/17

Appearance - Pours clear and rich copperish red with a khaki colored, quarter finger-width head that dissipates rather quickly leaving behind a mostly barren surface and a razor thin ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell - Aroma is a balance of caramel malts with hops that hit on floral, spicy and citrusy character.

Taste - Follows the nose. Balanced flavor of caramel malt sweetness lays the foundation for the floral, spicy and citrusy hops to play off of; there's even a hint of berry tingling in the finish, along with soft caramel and citrus character that lingers nicely in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with slightly bitey carbonation. Slick, nigh velvety texture makes it go down stupid wasy with a crisp, slightly dry finish.

Overall - I'd venture to guess this is a tweak on the India Red Ale that was featured last year in their variety 12 packs. Very similar profile, but I don't think it's quite as good; less defined in some ways. Regardless, it scratches the itch that's been there since the other one went "AWAL", so I'll probably snatch this up on occasion. Damn solid RIPA.

Smells malty with distant Earth/ pine.
Color appears brown. Head is half a finger wide and lacing is thickly ringed.
Now this is tasty. What's wrong here?
Right off the bat I get "fresh" out of this. I guess that means I've always liked this brewery's water used. Juicy caramel malt and citrus juice and pine-like hops, all in a sweet blend I believe to be, as I said, just tasty. After the initial sweetness, some bitterness puckers things a bit. Some earth is still present too, but it all seems quite clean. Pretty nice.
Smooth mouthfeel, creamy, medium carbonation. Creamy throughout.
I nice change-up with this red IPA. Feels great.

Received two twelve ounce bottles from my Dad a couple days ago in July 2017. I love a good red and this did not disappoint. Fine red aftertaste cinched it for me as a goto Red.

Hazy copper brown with a very dense and long lasting off white head. Rings of fine bubble lace stick to the sides of the glass.
Smell is sweet candy like malts with some pine resins.
Taste is rich sweet malts that are almost instantly pushed aside for the earthy pine hop oils.
Still fairly balanced for an IPA.
Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. Finish pretty balanced and dry.
I just bought a single at first. I will spring for a six pack next time. A very tasty beer.

12oz, best by 08/02/17
A - hazed copper colored ale with a thick & creamy ivory head that fades to a persistent foam
S - deep maltiness with hints of caramel, brown sugar and bready grain along with earthy, piney hops
T - malt and hops tendem maximum flavors here: notes of caramel, toffee, grain, brown sugar pair with grapefruit zest and earthy herbal and piney hops
M - full body, creamy and resinous with pine riding out the bitter finish
O - big flavored red IPA, or whatever you want to call it. I always love beers like this. I'd definitely buy this again and also highly recommend it to someone who likes bold bitter hops and appreciates a heavy malt character to go with it.

Pours a hazy mahogany color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, alcohol, slight yeast, pale malt, hint of wheat, spicy hops, hint of citrus hops, hint of pine, and a hint of candi sugar. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable dryness and bitterness. Tastes of sweet malt, alcohol, slight yeast, pale malt, hint of wheat, spicy hops, hint of citrus hops, hint of pine, and a hint of candi sugar. Overall, good appearance, complexity, and feel, but cloying.

This is not my favorite style of beer. I typically find American red ales with their Carmel malts and high levels of citrus hops off-putting. That being said, I liked this beer.

It has a nice medium brown copper clear appearance with some small particles in suspension. Smell is carmel first, then a Piney citrus whiff. Taste is bitter, but balanced with a light roast taste in the backside. Overall, a solid beer that represents its style well.

One of my favorite styles and this isn't bad. A nice looking beer, cloudy golden brown, good head and lacing. Nice malty caramel smell and taste. Very smooth feel. Not as good as Run Off Red but good.

Handsome coppery color with swirling foam in the fancy Kasteel chalice. Seems like the classic resiny and over-hopped Red Ale style. I just don't detect much aroma, but maybe I'm off tonight. Taste is walnut skins, vegetable notes. Sharp and spritzy on the tongue.

This has some of what I call a "musty" flavor, but in a good way. Roasted grain, a lot of caramel, and pleasantly sweet. Overall this has a little too much of the plain bittering hops for my taste, but clean and well made. From the 12 oz bottle purchased at the Platypus in Bend.

Poured a red amber color with a frothy off-white one finger head. Heavy lacing was present. A light floral malty aroma was present. Sweet light malt like Smithwicks with a sharp bite of hops like an IPA, which overpowers the malt. This could be a bit more balanced. Medium body with balanced carbonation. This is a good beer but just a bit too hoppy for me.

Initial impression from a bottle:

C+ (3.15) / ABOVE AVERAGE

***
06.18.17 2nd impression from a 12 fl oz bottle:

Drinks like an overhopped amber, but the hop profile is disinteresting (generic floral hops and maybe a hint of resin is all I get). Has a toasted amber malt backbone but feels scratchy and dry on the palate.

Unrefreshing. Medium-bodied.

06.19.17 impression from a bottle:

Pale amber body colour of below average vibrance. Head is white in colour and nicely frothy. Head retention is ~5 minutes in my nonic pint glass.

Aroma is of toasted malts and amber malts, as well as floral and slightly fruity hops. Aromatic intensity is average.

Taste follows the aroma, but lacks balance or harmony. Depth of flavour is decent but unimpressive.

Smooth and wet. Unrefreshing.

A shrug of a red ale from a brewery known for doing far better work. A rare miss from Deschutes, but ultimately not bad - just merely average. Drinkable for what it is.

Poured into my grande Starbucks cup with the peeling goddess logo on the side. At first taste, it's a like a mild Irish Smithwicks, but then the hops kick in and there's a mild hoppy IPA bite that stays on the palette for a few seconds. I love their combination of malty and hoppy. Hope this one sticks around for a few years!

Pours a clear dark amber with a white head. Smells of caramel and sweet malts. Tastes of light caramel, sweet malts, earthy slightly bitter hops, and maybe a little anise. Medium and very creamy body with medium carbonation. Overall this is a very tasty amber while still showing great IPA traits.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Shaker pint glass, "best by" date 6-27-17.

APPEARANCE: pours a nice amber color with less than one-finger tan head that slowly dissipated until a thin, unbroken layer of small bubbled remained, there is significant lacing on the glass, lighter carbonation.

SMELL: caramel, bread and a toasted note.

TASTE: initially sweet caramel and then a toasted, earthy hop profile.

PALATE: medium body and lighter carbonation.

OVERALL: this is a good beer but I have had better IRA's so I would not seek this one out again, the toasted note is not to my liking, this is a great brewer and I can't wait to try more beers from them.
