Picked up a single from the Craft Beer Hop Stop cooler 10-10-18 for $1.83. Best by 12-13-18 but it has been cold stored since purchase plus Deschutes makes beers that have endurance.

Beer poured golden with a beautiful billowy white head that has some good hang time.

Nose initially was tropical and grapefruit forward but has taken a dank aroma as it warms up.

Taste is citrus and pine forward with a light touch of melon with a medium bitter finish that leaves some pine tar on the palate.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty refreshing.

Overall a nice old school IPA!

Taste: fresh hops, sharp, fruit, notes of caramel, pleasant finish. Fresh citrus floral, hop nose. Pale gold hue, semi clear, with white head and ringed lace. A bright easy drinking IPA. 65 IBUs

Pours a light golden color with head and lacing for days !!!!!..Aroma is both citrusy and malty and on the nose, blances quite well. Taste, once I can get through the massive, foamy head is full of citrus and a good hop bitterness. Unfortunately the head is deceiving and the beer is sort of flatter than I think it should be. Balance maintains well and the citrus, fresh and lemony remains throughout the process

Clear gold with three finger of cream color head. Rings and splotches of lace.
Smell is dank pungent citrus resins.
Taste is dank citrus pine resinous hops. Some mildly sweet malt support.
Mouthfeel is medium with strong carbonation. The finish is dry and medium bitter.
Overall an interesting and tasty beer.

Dang! I didn't realize that this was an annually-changing single-hop release when I recently picked it up at The Beer & Beverage Shoppe. I am a self-avowed, self-described hophead so this sort of thing definitely appeals to me, but I have now missed out on many years' worth of this series. 8=(

From the Bottle: "2018 Release Fresh Hop I.P.A. Featuring Strata Hops"; "Family & Employee Owned Since 1988"; "Profile - Tropical and citrusy, the enchanting aroma of the freshest possible hops."; "Bottle Conditioned for Quality [-] Live yeast added to the bottle allows this beer to age gracefully and stay fresher, longer. Keep bottles upright, and away from light & heat."; "IBUs 65".

Having Pop!ped the cap, I went with a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass so as not to rouse any lees that may have settled onto the punt/kick. Once it was sufficiently decanted, an in-glass swirl raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with decent retention, leaving some nice lacing in its wake. Color was odd - Yellow (SRM = 4), but with a greenish tint/cast to go along with the NE-quality clarity. Hmm. Nose smelled slightly dank with a hint of honeydew melon. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium, about on par for the style. The taste really followed the nose in that it was mainly of honeydew with a light dankness. It was interesting, but the bitterness did not really match its measured IBUs, which was kind of a letdown. I found myself wondering if this hop might not do better if paired with another hop strain. Finish was dry, slightly bitter, but I just felt unfulfilled. YMMV.

Bright pine/citrus aroma, pours a clear straw with a dusting of white head. Bright citrus notes, with some bitter pith coming in as well. There's a touch of sweetness, but it's not there for long. Overall, this is a bright blast of hops, and a very solid IPA.

From a bottle, this beer is a light straw color with a soapy white head. Lots of lace. The aroma is a little pungent, wonderful fruity, flowery scent. Soft malt flavor...firm mid-taste bitterness. Fresh, pine and citrus hop flavor throughout the beer. Full body. This is a very enjoyable beer.

12 oz. bottle - Best by 12/13/18:

Pours golden with a creamy white fluffy head. Nice lacing sticks.

The smell is herbal/leafy, dank.

The taste is dank - leafy/floral/herbal. Some tropical/citric fruitiness comes through. Sweet caramel balances it. Some alcohol shows. Sharp, spicy finish.

Medium-to-full-bodied. Very good carbonation level.

Not familiar with the Strata hop. Not sure if it's the particular hop strand, but this isn't one of my favorite brews (preferred the other IPA's I've had) from this brewery. But, it's still a very good brew and a good example of an IPA! Glad I caught it in time (and bought two bottles off the singles shelf- They were the last two left - and no six-pack - or I would probably have bought that)! Grab it while it lasts!

There are times in life when things are kind of weird. That guy who sat behind you in Art/History that always smelled like sticky icky... yeah, he was weird. Then there was your astronomy teacher with the googly eye, yeah, hella weird. But those are like ‘funny weird,’ like, ‘haha,’ you know? There was even that girl in your film history class, yeah, the one with the night crawler lips. She was weird. And you still would, you know? Anyway, what I am trying to get to is that this beer, this beer right here, is weird. But not in a good way. It doesn’t make me laugh like the stoner in my astronomy class. It doesn’t make me giggle like my astronomy teachers lopsided appearance did, and it sure as hell doesn’t make me want to get hot and wild... even if it’s with said nightcrawler lips. This beer is just weird. And nasty. And it doesn’t make me want to do bad things. Pass.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of resin, citrus and toasted caramel. Sweet caramel and citrus with a piney bitterness.

This beer pours a dull gold with a moderate head. The aroma is unusual, with a combo of berry and stonefruit notes and an undercurrent of cannabis, black tea, and cranberry. The flavor is super juicy upfront, with strawberry, rose wine, cranberry, raspberry, white grape, cannabis, fruit loops, and a solid amount of bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall this is a really excellent beer - utterly unique in my experience of hop flavors, with a tasty based and solid bitterness.

The clear golden beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” fluffy off-white head that recedes slowly leaving a layer of foam on the sides of the glass before it becomes a ring around the glass and a thin irregular island of foam that persists for a long time on the liquid. Sipping creates a couple of arches of lacing and several small patches, some of which slide back down to the liquid.

The aromas are fairly complex with earthy resinous notes, some citric zest, some tropical fruits and just a bit of light bready malt.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with some resin, citric zest and tropical fruits. While the bready malt sweetness is noticeable it does nothing to conceal the earthy resinous bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and lightly prickly with the moderate persistent carbonation. The long finish begins as most of the flavors begin to fade to leave the earthy resinous bitterness to fade even more slowly as it moves to the back of the palate and sits there for a fairly long time in the dry ending.

Overall this is a tasty, enjoyable beer and well made beer as we’d expect from Deschutes. While it’s not my favorite wet hop beer I an glad to have had a chance to try it.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a golden amber color with a two finger head of white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is rather strong of a bready smell mixed with a good showing of tropical fruit and citrus with some lemon and orange. Along with these smells comes some notes of biscuit and a bit of grass and herb.
Taste – The taste begins with a bready taste that has a decent amount of an orange fruitiness upfront. There is a bit of a grapefruit and pine hop as well as some light grainy flavors. As the taste advances more and more sweetness of a caramel and a fruity nature comes to the tongue. All the while a little bit more bitter pine hop, as well as some lemon and more bread come to the tongue and with a little herb, one is left with a citrusy, slightly sweet, malty, and nicely hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the more chewy side with a carbonation level that was rather normal. The feel is great for the more malty, sweet and citrusy tastes of the brew and makes for an easy drinking beer.
Overall – This is a tasty brew. It’s got tons of flavor and a very nice easy drinking profile. This was a nice rendition of Chasin Freshies and one to try if you get a chance.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a fine, two finger white head with good retention and thick lacing. Aroma of pale malt with a little biscuit, citrus hops, lemon and grapefruit, hints of pine, mildly spicy. Flavor is lightly caramel pale malt, citrus hops, lemon and grapefruit to start with light tropical and stone fruit developing into a citrus hops finish with nice lingering citrus rind hops and a variety of indistinct fruit esters that fit with the citrus quite nicely. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess, nice mouthfeel. Interesting hop. My first impression of my first sip was slightly underwhelming, with a mostly lemon citrus and rind base, but lots of other fruit flavors slowly reveal themselves into a great finish that leaves lingering fruit and spicy notes. I liked the fact that I was spending more time enjoying the finish for a while rather than eager for the next sip (both are nice, but this is more unusual). I'm not familiar with the Strata hop, but if this is any indication, I will look forward to it again. Deschutes seems to always come through and this is one of the more interesting fresh hops I've had this year. Kudos.

Mini review:

Date: Best by 12/13/18, tasted on 10/13/18.

Appearance: Clear bright gold with two fingers of white head.

Aroma: Rich pine like hop aromas with a subtile spiciness and maybe some resin like elements as well. It smells a little like a Christmas wreath.

Taste: First, its very creamy, with pine like hops taking center stage before they are quickly rushed off by the malts. However, the malts never get too sweet as they are pushed aside by a very pleasent lighter bitterness.

Comments: It falls more in the fridge filler category for me, but I did enjoy this one. It seems Deschutes makes really nice, if mostly uncelebrated beers.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured quite clear. Not familiar with Strata hops. This was a really intense, zesty, brisk hoppy flavor. Rich, strong, tangy, and very unique. A tough sipper based on intensity of flavor but I enjoyed it. A far cry from what most IPAs are tasting like right now.

Found this at Wegmans close to Wilmington Delaware. Gotta Love it. As an ipa guy couldn’t resist trying this. Bought a cold six pack because I knew Deachutes is good. Had one right away and wasn’t disappointed. Nice citrus smell as I opened the bottle. Very interesting flavor. Hoppy with a little tang gives it a little something that differentiates from mosaic and Citra favorites. This goes down easy with a nice bitter finish. Very happy to have this beer on the east coast. And glad to have five more in my fridge.

Color is nice and golden. Transparent. Scent is subtle but pleasant of citrusy hops. Beer goes down smooth, doesn't linger. Taste is curious, must be the strata hop that is newer and I've never tried before. Delightful and leaves me wanting more.

Best by 12/13/18. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours golden with solid clarity; fluffy white head that falls leaving nice bubbly retention and nice lacing. The aromas are floral. Some fruit. Some bread. Malts are there. The flavors follow the nose. More floral notes. Some earthy notes. Some fresh grass. Some grapefruit. Moderate bitterness. Malts do their thing without dominating. Finishes more on the drier side. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's slick and smooth.

This is a solid IPA. It's more or less what you would expect from a Deschutes IPA. It might not be "flashy", but it's a nice use of hops. Not bad at all. It's enjoyable and fun to drink.

Appearance - Pours clear and pure golden in color with a white, near finger width head that displays good retention before dying down to a thin, broken layer of suds and a thin ring around the edge of the glass. A few small spots and lines make up the lacing.

Smell - Hoppy aroma with citrus, topical notes and light dank. Faint bready sweetness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Grapefruit, passionfruit and some leafy, dank undertones. Faint floral, spice and bready sweetness. Finish is mild pith bitterness with a hint of apricot.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick, easy drinker with a crisp, slightly dry finish.

Overall - Really good fresh hop IPA. This new Strata hop tastes like it's got some potential!
