On tap at Fredfest 2009. This was 100% oak aged in Pinot Noir barrels. It ultimately was blended into the final product of 2009 Mirror Mirror.
Pours dark orange with a generous one inch, off white head. Head retention is excellent and the lacing is very good, all over the glass.
There's a low level of earthy hops in the aroma. Some tannins and pinot notes are evident. The malt is rich caramel and toffee with a little alcohol and oak.
There's surprisingly little alcohol heat for a 100% barrel aged barleywine. The malt is rich and toasted. Notes of toffee, caramel, and earthiness are present. Bitterness is medium. Tannins are evident, as well as some oak character. The finish is sweet toffee and caramel with some alcohol, which becomes more apparent as the beer warms.
The beer is medium bodied with low carbonation and a creamy, smooth mouthfeel.
This was great to try after drinking 2005 and 2009 Mirror Mirror on tap all weekend. It was noticeably different and quite delicious
