Smells some of whisky and dark roast.
Medium mouth feel.
Hints of peanut butter, chocolate.
Overall a somewhat odd final taste, but still good.

12oz bottle poured into a pint
A- pours jet black in color with a one finger foamy khaki head that reduces to a ring
S- charred malt, chocolate, molasses, oak, whiskey, brown sugar, a hint of roasted peanut
T- initial flavors of the base beer give dark roasted malts, char, licorice, and molasses. Mid-palate brings out the barrel, adding bold barrel juice, oak, caramel and vanilla. The finish gives a light roasted peanut flavor, but it is predominately whiskey barrel. Lingers of charred malt and whiskey
O- regular Obsidian is one of my favorite stouts. It was nice getting to try it in BA form, but the peanut butter was hard to find

Motor oil appearance, minimal head.
Light carbonation with an above average body, has a bit of a thick feel.
Aroma is a strong hit of wood, bakers chocolate, malt and roasted malt. Molasses and whiskey.
Taste has a mild sweetness with a dry, dark bakers chocolate bitterness. The peanuts show up way in the background for me but do linger in an oily way in the finish.
The dry bitterness might turn some off but it made it outstanding to me

Bottle pour - dark as night with short lasting cocoa head. Nose is mild boozy barrel wood with a hint of earthy peanutty goodness. Taste follows for the most part with a lingering hint of barrel on the finish.

Pours clear, chestnut in color with one quarter inch head. Taste is baker's chocolate, milk chocolate and peanut butter. Slightly sweet, roasty, medium body, low carbonation. Excellent peanut butter flavored stout. I like how this is not overly sweet. Well done Deschutes.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle dated 3/31/22 into a snifter.
Look- Black, light brown frothy head, opaque, average head retention and lacing.
Smell- Peanuts, whiskey, coffee, cocoa, low medium strength of scent.
Taste- Peanuts, whiskey, oak, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, mildly sweet, mildly boozy, medium strength of flavor.
Feel- Between medium and full body, silky, moderately creamy, mildly boozy, moderately mouth warming, low bitterness, average carbonation, smooth, moderately mouth coating.
Overall- Look was black with average head retention and lacing. Bouquet had good aromatics, just not strong enough. Flavors were great, but again if they had been more vibrant this beer would have been truly special. Feel was outstanding with very desirable qualities. Overall this was a very good beer that was on the cusp of greatness, but nevertheless very enjoyable and easy to drink.

A 355ml bottle, with a packaged on date of 31st March 2022. Poured into a snifter glass.
Appearance: Black in colour with a thin tanned head that dissipated fairly quickly, while leaving some lacing.
Aroma: Light roast, sweet malt, chocolate, molasses, peanut, and whiskey notes.
Taste: Lightly sweet, moderately bitter, roasty, dark chocolate, whiskey, peanuts, hints of vanilla, and a touch boozy.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
Overall: It’s a good boozy sipper, and there was some nuttiness, but it wasn’t really peanut butter, which I was really hoping for.

Black in color with a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering a third of the top. The aroma is of faint whiskey and peanut butter. I’m tasting whiskey and dark malt. The mouth is dry and lightly sticky.

Jet black with a modest but lasting tan head and some decent lacing.
The aroma is peanut butter, chocolate, whiskey.
The taste is dark chocolate, mild peanut butter, sweet roasted malt, hints of whiskey and vanilla. The body is medium, mild carbonation, creamy smooth, very drinkable.
Altogether, this is an excellent imperial stout, tasty, smooth, warming at the finish, very nice especially for holidays and cold weather but good anytime.

Deschutes Brewery "Peanut Butter Obsidian Stout"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle "PACKAGED ON: 03/31/22 9.7% ALC/VOL" and sampled on 10/02/22
$4.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Not only is this brewed with peanutbutter - no flavorings - it's whiskey barrel aged and bottle conditioned. It's got the typical stout appearance with a black body topped by a finger's width of tan foam. The aroma is surprisingly chocolatey but there is some peanut there, and whiskey as well. It doesn't seem like Bourbon to me, but more like Canadian whiskey. The taste offers much more peanut butter but it's not the star of the show by any stretch. Just as in the aroma the whiskey has a solid presence and there's some oak as well. That helps to dry it in the finish along with the alcohol which is quite clear. I'm assuming that's from the barrels and not the beer itself. It's not that bitter at 40 IBUs for such a big beer but the alcohol and oak really dry it out in the finish. I feel like we're kind of missing the Obsidian stout though, there's just so much whiskey barrel to it, and on that note, the peanut butter is fairly limited as well. That's good in my opinion because it's just adding a little bit of extra character. This is definitely a sipper though. I think this would be great to nip at while reading some Mark Twain. In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently crisp then smooth. There's just a light caress of carbonation on the tongue. The head retention was just OK but at 9.7%, not including the alcohol from the barrels, that's to be expected. Some minor spotty lacing is left behind but this was never supposed to be about appearance as much as it is flavor and aroma. I like this a lot and I think it's well done but I also think it could be better. There's a whole lot of barrel character going on that could probably be a little more subtle and balanced, and in the end I'm not sure that this is any better than the original, and in fact it's really quite a different beer altogether.
