Containing pilsner and 2-row malts with white cane sugar added throughout the boil, half of this small batch beer was aged for 6 months in Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. The whole batch was then blended and put in pinot barrels for another 6 months, with the pinot barrels buried in a snow cave for the final two days.

Reserve of the Moment on tap at PDX pub on 1.6.2012.

A - Served a dark orange, almost brown with a small tan head. Pretty good retention and some slight lacing.

S - Carmel mostly, with some booze and orange citrus scents.

T - Sweet dark old fruit, carmel, and booze.

D - Still some alcohol burn, but a pretty tasty brew.

O - Sweet and tasty. A bit hot still, but glad I got to try this one.

On tap at the PDX brewpub during their OBF reserve series tappings.

The beer pours a reddish brown color with pretty good head retention and fair lacing. The nose is very malty and sweet, showcasing brown sugar, caramel and cherry cough drop. The flavor profile replicates the nose for the most part, though the sweet cherry cough drop really comes on strong. There is also some underlying spice, but the sweetness in this beer really dominates pretty much everything else. Mouthfeel is rich and full, with an impressively long and drawn out finish. Drinkability is OK, but the obvious high alcohol (would guess it's in the 10% or more range) and sweetness wears out the palate after a bit.

A pretty nice beer, and one I'm guessing might well improve with age, thereby (hopefully) drying out the sweetness just a bit. Not that I'm likely to ever find out, but this a beer I'd like to try again someday after it's been allowed to age a bit.
