This Spruce Tip IPA highlights the spruce’s piney & candied lemon peel character in a beautiful west coast ale, while Chinook & Columbus hops lend spicy and woody elements. It’s brewed with FRESH branch tips from spruce trees, and this year’s batch is even higher in ABV: 6.4%.

Pint pour on draught at the brewery. Served in a tulip glass. It is an attractive pour: clear, honey-orange in color, with a thin ecru head and extensive, soapy lacing. The smell is mostly malty with hints of spruce and citrus. Its taste is impressive: the spruce tips are evident but subtle and balance well against the tart lemon and grapefruit rind and notes of sweeter citrus. The Columbus hops provide an earthy, spicy, bitterness and the Centennial adds strong bitterness. The depth of flavor is impressive. This ale is lite and crisp but the 6.6% ABV gives it good substance. Overall, NYC Tumbleweed is a very nice, West Coast influenced IPA. Double Tap shows a really deft touch with the spruce tips. This ale is worth seeking out.
