Another beer from the Bistro's 10th annual double ipa festival, Feb 6, 2010.
Yet another example of the high ibu crystal malt wars, this is a very dark ipa compared to current (and historical?) trends. A dark copper pour, this one looks malt heavy, off white head 1/2". The aroma is seemingly Cascade, maybe Simcoe. Just a lot of toffee malt notes and grapefruit.
Taste just drops a heavy crystal malt contingent all up in ya not far from Virginia. Ugh, heavy, bitter, but not really anything taste wise beyond the bitterness and heft of the caramel and toffee notes from the excessive malt contingent. Weird thing was, despite all that malt character, it did like, nothing to cover up the alcohol. All those bone dry unbalanced hoppy double ipas in the last 10 years seem to do a much better job (and I'm not even talking about brut ipas either). I think I have a good idea why we haven't seen this one return at the festival.
Only rating it as average because it was at the time, definitely not under the direction and shape of things to come (since and looking forward).

On tap at Jack's. The beer is a dark cloudy copper hue, uncharacteristically dark for a West Coast DIPA. The head is dense and lasting, leaving plenty of lacing behind. Mild on the nose, herbal with a grapefruit-like citrus note and plenty of crystal malt alongside the hops. The herbal, resiny hop character is even more pronounced on the palate. There's a huge malt backbone, almost barleywine-esque, though the sweetness is reserved and there's enough bitterness in the finish to make the beer feel fairly dry. I enjoyed my pint of this well enough, but it's fairly average for the style.

Finally had a chance to check out the new Jack's that opened in San Ramon, and I'm glad they still had their DIPA on tap since I only got a small sample @ the IIPA Fest.
Pours a vibrant reddish orange color with a nice fluffy white head. At first glance, you may think it was a red ale. I got alot of sweet malts in the nose and not very much hop scent...again...Is this an Imperial red maybe? Great flavor of caramel malts with a faint pine along with a little citrus flavor. It had a medium body and a pretty smooth finish without that big alcohol flavor. I thought this ale was quite tasty, but not your everyday DIPA if you're looking for a hop bomb.

Sampled at Bistro DIPA fest 2/6/2010
Pours orange/red, clear enough (a little hazy), with a fluffy white head, good retention, but little to no lacing.
Aroma is of pine, malt, and some booze and bitterness.
Flavor follows suit with piney hops at the forefront followed by alcohol, lots of bitterness, and a dose of maltiness.
Medium/heavy body. Moderately drinkable but I'll stick with 6 oz.
