Benard, Belgian Style Dubbel is a delicately balanced brew that will surprise you with a sweet tartness in the first sip and aromas reminiscent of raisins and cherries. Benard transitions into a malty character of fresh bread and hints of chocolate followed by a smooth dry finish and a final impression of pure harmony.

Been sitting on this one awhile

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep golden orange topped by a dense two finger off white head that fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of dark fruits with some plum notes as well as some nice caramel maltyness
T: Taste is a large amount of those sweet dark fruit notes with some caramel sweetness and a little hint of spice along with a slight dark bread note. Swallow is more plum and dark fruit with lingering caramel sweetness and a little more spice.
M: This beer has a medium mouthfeel with soft carbonation that is adequate for the style and a slightly drying finish
O: Overall this one is pretty solid. It isn't quite as good as what you can get from Belguim but it is far from terrible. Decent flavors with some decent balance as well. This one appears to be retired but it isn't one to lose sleep over if it stays that way.

22 ounce bottle into chalice, bottled in July 2014. Pours slightly cloudy deep amber/copper color with a small dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a spotty lacing cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, cherry, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, light chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, cherry, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, light chocolate, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, clove, caramel, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate amount of dryness present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice dubbel style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

22 oz bottle. Pours clear light orange amber with a small creamy off white head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves little lacing.

The aroma is chocolate malt with some dark fruit and musty yeast.

The flavor is sweet biscuity caramel and toffee malts with fruits and alcohol. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, kind of odd for a dubbel...overly sweet and thin.

Bomber bottle, w/o freshness/bottling date info.

On the lighter side for a "dubbel". Pours clear darker amber, under a moderate but nice looking small bubble head, leaving some ringed and fine lacing.

Sweat malt nose

While it may not look exactly what its supposed to by style, it hits the note closer with respect to the taste. Sweet malts, candi sugar notes, caramel, maple and an air of Belgian yeast character. Tasty and pleasing. Nothing amazing, but worth a try

From the 650 ml bomber, this Dubbel pours a clear dark amber reminiscent of an Oktoberfest, with a quickly dissipating head of big white bubbles with no retention, and little to no lacing. Nose of tart pie cherries, raisins, and sweet malts. Flavors follow the nose with light tart cherries to the front and sides, a light raisin character to the back, and sweet dark malts/ light brown sugar throughout. This one finishes light on the aftertaste with cherries and sweet malts. Wet mouth feel and light carbonation leaves one wondering if it was a marzen or a cherry amber they just had. While usually a fan of FCB beers, this one lacks the depth, character, and spices to be called a dubbel. That said it is highly sessionable and hides the alcohol it contains very well.
