Served in a snifter at Beer Market - Vernon Hills.
After a lackluster cask pull of Abbot down the street, I need something to smother the off-flavors from my tongue. Welcome, robust barleywine! This stuff pours a lightly-murky garnet-amber topped by a half-finger of glowing cream foam. The nose comprises lightly-buttery toffee, dry maple syrup, rum-soaked rye bread, candied orange peel, light dank greens, and a hint of cocoa. The taste brings in more of the same, with a touch more cocoa, the syrup is less dry (we'll call it "fresher"), and the bread is toasted ever-so-slightly. The body is a hefty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a nicely complex barleywine, one that comes as a small meal in a glass. Not bad.
