355 mL can purchased at the brewpub; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, ruddy brownish-amber colour, topped with a full inch of foamy, soapy, pale beige-tinted head that lasts for a little over five minutes. A creamy collar and frothy cap remain afterwards, with a beautiful curtain of ringed lace also left in its wake - looks pretty darn good to me. Sweet on the nose - grapefruit and orange peel, with hints of candied apple, bubble gum and earthy hops; there's also some light toffee and toasted malt sweetness coming through.
Robust flavour profile - I'm getting some nuttiness, with toasted bread, toffee, orchard fruit and subtle hints of candied citrus peel. A little earthy on the back end, with suggestions of molasses, roasted grains and candied citrus dissipating into a persistent earthy/dirty, moderately sweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with relatively mild carbonation that gently agitates the palate; feels smooth and a little slick on the tongue, with reasonably high drinkability. This serving size is a little small, but a tallboy would be just the right amount.
Final Grade: 3.82, a B+. Midnight Amber made for a fine introduction to Lambton county's youngest craft brewery. A little more complex and nuanced than your average Ontario amber, with a good balance between the toasty-sweet malts and earthy, slightly citrusy hop flavours - an autumn-friendly quaff, for sure. Ambers are not my thing, so I don't see myself repeating this all that often, but I still think this is a pretty good one - worth a try, at least.
