355 mL can from the brewery; no canning date and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy orange-amber colour, producing just over a finger of soapy white head. It seeps off within five minutes or so, leaving behind a couple of rings of lace as it's worn down to a sudsy cap and collar - looks like an old school West Coast IPA, and the aroma continues that theme. I'm getting lightly caramelized sugars, bready malts and pine, with floral hops and a touch of citrus peel.
It's a tasty pale ale, with its flavours mirroring the nose - toasted grains, bready malts, caramelized sugars and earthy, floral hops. Piney bitterness on the back end, with hints of caramel and earthiness fading into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently prickles the tongue; it's a little slick/oily, but the low abv helps maintain a fairly refreshing feel. Very quaffable.
Final Grade: 3.88, a B+. Before all of the hazy juicebomb IPAs and milkshake abominations, I seem to remember most Canadian IPAs - or at least, those that I had the opportunity to try back in the day - having more of a passing similarity to the West Coast style. So 519 Brewcoast is a bit of a blast from the past - you could call it a boring old retread, but I'm more inclined to see it as a pretty good, semi-local rejuvenation of the brews that lured me into the thrall of IPAs in the first place. Suffice it to say I'll be drinking more of this in the future.
