355 mL can from the brewpub; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy golden-yellow colour with flecks of sediment visible within its translucent complexion; less than a finger of loose, big bubbled head lasts for little more than ninety seconds. A frothy cap and a small ring of lace are the only remnants - looks alright so far. Smells like a blueberry muffin - quite saccharine, with hints of bready, wheaty malts obscured by the blueberry, which may or may not be authentic. I'm leaning towards 'real'.
It's pretty tasty - it's also very one-sided, in that blueberry represents the entire shebang. It's sweet and a little juicy, with hints of wheaty bread underneath; finishes with blueberry muffin and a twinge of blueberry skin tannin astringency. Light-ish in body, with fairly low carbonation that gently froths up on the palate; smooth, soft mouthfeel with extraordinary drinkability. I could drink a few of these in a row, which is not something I usually say about blueberry beers.
Final Grade: 3.73, a B grade. Blueberry beers are a dicey prospect for this beer geek: while I've had a handful of really good, memorable ones, the majority leave me underwhelmed. Thankfully, Point Break is honestly a decent blueberry wheat beer - ok, it's sweeter than I'd like, but that brings me back to my original point, which is that I'm picky about these - and so the fact that I have no serious complaints is a good sign. Worth a try if you have enjoyed a blueberry ale in the past, or even if you're just curious.
