355 mL can from the brewery; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours pale straw yellow with sandy sediment hovering throughout its body; gathered atop is half an inch of loose, sudsy white head that scatters within ninety seconds. A modest collar lives on, surrounding a filmy layer on the surface; swirling the glass produces some spotty lace. The aroma is subtle, offering up hints of lime zest, grainy malts and toasted coconut, in descending order.
Keeping in mind that this is a light/Mexican-style lager, it's surprisingly flavourful and well put-together, i.e. neither the lime zest nor the toasted coconut come off as overbearing. The former adds a citrusy, somewhat spicy note at the forefront of the sip, while the latter adds a sweet coconut flavour that assists this lager's clean, grainy malt base. Light in body, with lively carbonation that prickles and prods the palate throughout the sip, contributing to its crisp, smooth & refreshing mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.69, a solid B grade. Point Brewing's Lime Coconut Cerveza is a bit of an anomaly, but given a choice between this and Corona with a lime wedge, I'd take Point's lager ten times out of ten. I don't generally care for coconut in my beer, but its presence here is totally complementary - the lime zest supplies acidity, while the coconut supplies some added sweetness which reinforces this light lager's malt bill. If you've ever enjoyed a light lime lager in the past, you simply must try this - and even if you aren't a fan of them, this is unique enough to be worth a try if you're visiting Point Edward next summer.
