355 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served barely chilled.
Pours an inky black colour, stirring up half an inch of sudsy, khaki-tinged head that lasts for sixty seconds, give or take. A modest collar is the only remnant, save for a few wisps on the surface; there is decent lace deposition after each sip. Light roasted maltiness on the nose: cocoa, black coffee, that sort of thing, with hints of ash and raisin.
It's not bad. I'm getting roasted grains and a burnt, ashy flavour, with notes of cocoa powder and black coffee taking over by mid-sip. Bitter conclusion with herbal hops and oversteeped black tea receding into a roasty finish, followed by a dry aftertaste. Light in body, with active carbonation that tickles the surface of the tongue continuously throughout the sip; a little on the thin side, but in all fairness, it's only 4%. Easy to slog back; I could feasibly drink a few of these in a row.
Final Grade: 3.54, a B grade. Sturgeon is a passable dry Irish stout that I neither love nor dislike - this one lands somewhere in the mushy middle. Maybe a little more bitter than average for the style, but I'm fine with that; the thinness is also a bit of an issue, but again, it's 4%. I dunno what else to say: there aren't many virtues to extol, nor many flaws to complain about. It's just a dry stout. Try it if you're in the mood for one.
