355 mL can from the brewery; no canning date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear brassy golden colour, capped with one finger of loose, sudsy white head that falls apart within a couple of minutes. A thin collar and wispy cap are the only surviving remnants, though there is some spotty lace deposition after each sip. Belgian yeast dominates the nose, imparting hints of clove, coriander and banana; grainy, bready malts and grassy hops are also discernible.
Standard issue stuff for the style, but it's well constructed and easy drinking. A little sweet at the forefront, with bready malts, grains and candi sugar coming through by mid-sip. Spicier on the back end, with clove standing out amidst hints of grassy hops, apple skin and green banana; sweet apple and spiciness fade into the aftertaste, which is a little yeasty. Light-medium in body, with assertive carbonation that remains crisp and prickly right down to the last couple of swigs. Quite quaffable; I wouldn't mind a refill.
Final Grade: 3.67, a B grade. Point's Belgian Blonde Ale is a pretty good rendition, especially when you take into account that this brewery has little-to-no previous experience with Belgian styles. I, too, have limited experience with this style - I haven't reviewed a new one in a few years now, and as for year-round options, Leffe is the only one that comes to mind. This one's a little rough around the edges, i.e. the yeast spiciness might be a little overstated, but all in all it's a solid stab at a style that many Ontario brewers don't bother with. Worth a try if you're stopping by the brewpub.
