473 mL can, Day 9 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, effervescent golden-yellow colour, topped with an inch of soapy, foamy white head that dissipates within three or four minutes. A quarter-inch band of lace clings to the perimeter of the glass, with a frothy collar and thin cap remaining on the surface - looks good so far. Pleasant, understated aroma, offering up hints of lemon, berries and tropical fruits, as well as floral hops, grapefruit juice and wheaty malts.
A juicy, flavourful pale ale with notes of grapefruit juice, orange, pineapple and stone fruit, supported by bready, wheaty malt sweetness. Pithy, floral hops and some light resiny bitterness round out the tail end, with peach and pineapple receding into a fruity aftertaste. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with middling carbonation that gently agitates the surface of the palate; the mouthfeel is smooth and a little slick. A quaffable pale ale with session potential.
Final Grade: 3.94, a B+. Fair Dinkum XPA is the first Cold Bear brew I've had the chance to try, and I'm pretty happy with it. The Australian hops are utilized effectively, contributing plenty of citrus, stone & tropical fruit flavours and aromas - it's not necessarily going to be knocking any socks off, but it's brewed well and it's something I could see myself enjoying on a regular basis. A solid Australian pale ale, worth a try if you can find it.
