The third beer out of our ‘Wooden … it be nice!’ wild beer program, Eastern Seaboard is a wild ale aged on blackberries and beach plums.

To create Eastern Seaboard, we started with a rustic Farmhouse base ale. After spending nearly a year and a half aging in red and white wine barrels, this beer was racked onto several hundred pounds of blackberries and locally-sourced beach plums. Ruby red in color, Eastern Seaboard is deceptively dry and bottle conditioned to achieve a champagne-like carbonation.

Never ones to shy away from uniqueness, Dogfish Head brewers see the world as their pantry, reaching for beach plums, blackberries, wine barrels and wild fermentation for a sour ale that's just as unique as the brewery.

Rusty and berry-rouge, Eastern Seaboard reduces its quick bubbles to a wine-like appearance. Its earthy and fruity perfume is musty and cellar-like with bold plum and berry aromas with a backdrop of cider and wine. With a brisk sea-like scent, the flavors soon lead in with a juicy and candied flavor of wafer, taffy and light soghum.

With the somber sweetness fading on the middle palate, the fruits of plum and blackberry remain identifiable and bold. But as the ale develops its vinous, cidery and citrusy flavors naturally, the sourness builds in with red grape, lime and rhubarb. Weathered woods, peppery spice and strengthening wine influence closes the session spicy and sour.

Medium light on the palate, the beer's bold dark fruits have the beer seeming fuller, but its brisk and earthen sourness suggests lightness and refreshment. With a lambic-like demeanor, Eastern Seaboard finishes peppery, juicy and dry with a medium-short aftertaste of wine rot and leather.
