this is quality, an intensely coffee forward american stout, about as robust as they come for not being imperial or anything, really nice, especially if you like them bitter and deep. near black on the pour, frothy almost inch of lighter brown head, good luster to this, not real viscous for its darkness, looks good. the nose is awesome, almost more coffee than beer, a bitter dark roasted drip to me, light smoke and bitter baking chocolate in the mix with it, definitely built for coffee lovers. very little from yeast or hops to me, just the java and the dark grain. the flavor is similar, and this is somehow beautiful in its relative simplicity, i like leaving the middle malt richness out and leaning into the full intensity coffee from start to finish. sneakily the body is kind of light, and at it winds across the palate i get subtle almond and milk chocolate notes in support of the coffee. less acidity than seems possible for how coffee forward this is, not harsh but intense. i like it being drier, and i like the body being lesser than is common in these. this stands out as unique, bold, and yet rather drinkable at the same time. some caffeine jolt expected here too, really nicely done stout!
