Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours nearly jet black, somewhat viscous, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin khaki head that dissipates to patches with slight lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, molasses, whiskey and dark chocolate with a hint of caramel. Flavor is dark toasted malt, bakers chocolate, whiskey and licorice. Whiskey and licorice with light hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creamines and nice mouth feel. A very dark, rich imperial stout that leans towards a Russian imperial style but with less malt flavor. Pour was noticeably thick, but only moderately thick on the tongue. Strong, but a nice balance of flavors at the start with the barrel whiskey character developing in a boozy mid taste and finishing with licorice and light hops; a little stark on the palate. A big, bold stout with lots of barrel character. A nice introduction to their barrel program.
