A clear reddish copper in appearance, with a thin tan head. Smell is a slightly twangy, musty smell. Taste is right off the bat butter. Definitely a bit of diacytal here. Following that is a solid toasty malt middle, and a super clean bitter finish. Mouthfeel is good, low carbonation. Overall a pretty good beer, but the butter component was a bit too high for my tastes.

Reviewed from notes. On tap in August 2009.
Pours an amber-copper color with a white head that quickly falls, leaving just a bit of lacing. The nose has some floral, pine, and hebal hops with a bit of light caramel malt. Taste is slightly hoppy but pretty plain. Fairly good feel and all around pretty good drinkability.

Poured from the tap into a 5 ounce sample class.
Appearance was a dark orange-brown with a larger head than some of their other ales.
The aroma was wonderfully floral, like roses and tulips with pine. Almost reminiscent of Chinese floral teas.
The taste was slightly bitter with a floral aftertaste that matches well with the low-profile sweet barley malt.
Mouthfeel was really quite nice, but the bitterness upfront takes a notch off of the drinkability.

Sits in the glass a rusty orange with a minimal head. Smell is light, but pleasant with malty sweetness dominating and a bit of floral hops peaking through. Taste is just delicious, with 'session beer' written all over it. Soft, bready flavor and mild sweetnesss covers the palate front to back, but the finish and aftertaste kicks in a nice spicy, herbal bitterness that cuts back the malts and leaves you wanting another sip. I wouldn't agree that the hop levels rival Copperhead (which is what they state on their description of Big Sea), but I don't think it needs to be any hoppier either. Very tasty beer by Free State.
*Had the cask version a few days later. As expected, the serving temp was considerably warmer, and the body was softer and less carbonated. What surprised me was that the flavors seemed more pronounced and full. I expected a more melded, gentler version for some reason. Very good as well!

Oh, Free State. One of my favorite places. It was about 60 degrees in January and we sat outside in the sun and ordered a round (or 3) of drinks.
The Big Sea is new, so I gave it a pop.
Good looking brown/amber pour. Slight head could use some body to it.
Faint nut and hops come in the nose, but they don't overcome the malt and sweetness, which are subtle yet consistent.
Taste follows. Some nut in the beginning, then moves to a brief yet sharp bite from the floral hops, then back to a smooth finish. Alcohol is not noticeable. Rather clean finish.
I didn't not have this with food, but would like to try it with their Portabella mushroom sandwich
