5%. $10.50 AUD per pour (~330ml but the look of it if I had to guess) at Taphouse, Townsville, Australia.
Not a great Saison, but it does hint at peppery spice and biscuity Belgian saccharomyces. Not sure why the ABV is so below stylistic norms, but it's not a major detractor...just odd.
Faint amber malt sweetness. Dryness from the well attenuated yeast. Raisin, dessicated prune.
Doesn't nail the Belgian yeast profile, doesn't offer anything in terms of Brettanomyces, doesn't throw out any woodsy/oaky notes, doesn't play around in the herb/spice sandbox Fantome style, doesn't evoke any wild yeast or microflora.
An oddly low ABV attempt at the style that tastes oddly cold and clinical like it was a stainless steel fermented uninspired expression of a Saison -better described as a mediocre vaguely Belgian ale. I don't love it, and I can't imagine anyone with intermediate experience with Belgium-brewed Belgian ales (nevermind actual Saison style beers) will either.
That said, it's better than most of the Queensland beers I've had in my three weeks and change in the state. I'd easily pick this over XXXX, to what little extent as that should strike the reader as an endorsement...
