Light saison mouthfeel, with an Abbey ale flavour. Brewed with Black Prinz malt – a dehusked barley. Dark amber colour. Molasses and spice nose. Bold plum and prune taste.

Bottle from the brewery. Thin, some dark malt and yeast. Not on the style. Sort of quaffable. Lots of Room for improvement. An idea that needs more for execution.

Burdock is a new brew pub and music venue in Toronto at Dufferin and Bloor. The Brewery opened in August I believe and the bottle shop just this September. Their selection focused more on traditional European styles (German, Belgian, French) with some twists.
Aggressive pour gets three fingers of thick tan head, some nice lacing. Nice dark amber colour in the light, almost black at its darkest. a little cloudy.
banana on the nose, bubblegum, lemon, almost a light soapy hint. Smells creamy if thats possible. roasted malt is present but surprisingly subdued.
Taste really builds on the nose. Wonderful fruity banana and slightly sour notes from the yeast, slightly bitter but in a roasted earthy way not a sharp hoppy way. roasty malt at the end and slightly sweet. so much going on here, it hits all corners of the palate. Some dried pit fruit present as it warms. Nice carbonation and creamy feel, med body.
Overall this really impressed, especially surprising as the nose only hints at what comes next. Excellent balance of slightly sweet malts, roasty grain, fruity and sour phenols. This is a mature, confident and fresh beer with historic roots. Highly drinkable and simply delicious. An instant classic.
Will be getting many more of these as Burdock is right in my neighbourhood! Looking forward to the other bottles I picked up.
