355 mL can from the Toronto Brewing 2021 advent calendar; dated Oct 6 2021 and served barely chilled.
Pours a translucent brownish-copper colour, briefly topped with a quarter-inch cap of creamy, light tan-coloured head. It fizzles off within a minute or so, leaving little behind in its wake, save for a tight collar. It smells almost exclusively of malts - a little nutty, with bready sweetness and hints of cocoa and toffee; maybe just a touch of leafiness, too.
It's light and straightforward, but still pretty flavourful for only 3.3%. I'm getting toasted grains, bread and a touch of nuttiness, with hints of toffee and leafy hops rounding out the back end; just a suggestion of cocoa, with a slightly malty aftertaste that lingers momentarily before drying. Light in body, with middling carbonation that briskly brushes the surface of the palate - perhaps a little more 'bite' than I'd expect from a mild, but the beer itself is still crushable as all hell: this paltry 355 mL serving is practically a tease.
Final Grade: 3.80, a worthy B+. I've always considered myself more of a hophead, yet it's malt-focused session beers that I prefer over the session IPAs that have littered shelves over the past few years. I wish this were a more popular style, because then I might actually be able to find new ones at the LCBO. Burdock's Mild is a fine representation of one of England's more frequently overlooked styles of pub ale - not too sweet, not too thin, and appropriate for mass consumption. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat.
