Can: Poured a light brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and light lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with soft biscuit malt notes. Taste is also a mix of caramelized malt notes with soft biscuit malt notes and a semi-dry finish. The body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed altbier with good drinkability.

355 mL can served slightly chilled; dated Nov 21 2024. Day 15 of the 2025 Toronto Brewing advent calendar.

Pours a clear reddish copper-amber colour, producing just over an inch of bubbly, foamy, buff-coloured head that drops off over the next several minutes. A thin collar and an islet of creamy suds are the only survivors, save for some spotty lace deposition - looks fine so far. Mildly malt-forward aromas of bready, biscuity malts, caramel and baked apples, with hints of toasted grains, nuts and spicy, herbal hops.

It's a solid stab at an alt. I'm getting malty flavours of toasted bread, grains and digestive biscuits, as well as a little bit of caramelized sweetness; hints of baked apples and plums are also discernible. Bittersweet on the back end, with spicy, herbal hops asserting themselves late in the sip; finishes with hints of toasted nuts, herbal, earthy hops and biscuits. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel that makes for a very crushable brown ale.

Final Grade: 3.83, a B+. Burdock's Altbier isn't a perfect rendition of this uncommon German style, but it's a respectable effort that I'd encourage other BAs to seek out and try for themselves. I appreciated its rich malt profile, as well as the fact that it's countered by a firm dose of spicy noble hop character. A fine choice on a frigid, snowy January evening - I'd buy it again.
