Malty with a good mouth-feel but lacking in hops. Nothing special.

Served at cellar temperature into straight pint glass from 500ml brown bottle.

L) Very dark brown with ruby-red tinge, opaque, thin white bubbly head / film. Persistent lacing, for those that are interested.

S) Candied fruit and sweet chocolate notes. Very appetising.

T) Not as complex as the nose suggests. Nice mellow English dark malts, with subtle but ongoing hop bitterness.

F) A definite heft to the mouthfeel, related to the ABV. Nicely balanced out by stronger than expected carbonation. Well judged.

O) A very good strong ale, recommended to any fan of the style.

Bottled
Maple syrup coloured body medium frothy tan head. Chestnut body. Malt, hops, spice, oak, that wonderful traditional beer aroma, fruit, soap, chocolate syrup, alcohol, tobacco, apricot. Bittersweet and tangy. Dry finish. Good.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2012. Picked up some time back from a B&M store.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep reddish-brown hue with low carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of rich, fruity malt with notes of raisins, dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel/molasses, faint yeast and a warming whiff of booze in the background. Surprisingly nice.

Tastes of sweet, fruity malt with a dry finish. Notes of dried fruit, brown sugar, caramel, mild roasted malt, faint stewed hops and earthy yeast. Quite dry, with a hint of alcohol in the background. A subtle bitterness upon swallowing; the flavour doesn't linger. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with a touch of heat on the palate. Body seems a tad insubstantial for the style. Aftertaste of fruity malt and weak stewed hops.

Rather tasty - more impressive than I anticipated. A rich, fruity strong ale that improves as it warms and goes down nicely. Lovely nose; the flavour is slightly more muted and lacks depth. The body is also a little thin and could do with beefing up. That said, it's a pleasant winter warmer - well worth trying if you come across it.

500ml Bottle: best before 20 Dec 2012, poured @ home into a UK pint sleeve on 15 Nov 2012. The beer was obtained from my local B&M Bargains Store.

Nice deep, dark ruby red colour with a full uneven covering of tan foam on top.

Brown sugar type malty molasses in the nose and taste: this is a malts first and foremost brew. Prunes, plums and mixed nuts vie for your attention in the flavours as the malts and hops go to work with each other.

The body is moving towards rich and thick: the beer reminded me of those old winter warmers because it has that sort of Christmassy fireside taste and palate.

Cheap to buy: well worth the cost and I'll be getting some more in for December.

 

 

Enjoyed on May´11. Oversized glass.Pours dark brown in color. Beige creamy foam. Quite well retention leaving watery lacing rings. Toasted malts & forest berries undernotes on nose. Sligthly sweet flavor, mildy hints of coffee & smooth bitterness tasting up to the aftertaste.Hops almost imperceptible. Low carbonation but fat sensation mouthfeel. Not overhelming alcohol feeling makes it drinkable. A little dissapointing overall.

Sampled from a 500ml bottle in a recent case from the Beer Club of Britain.

The beer poured a very dark brown with a sizeable dark cream head. This settled to a 2mm film that displayed good retention and some effects of lacing.

The nose was dominated by roasted malts and a hint of berries. This theme continued through to the taste with an aftertaste of coffee and a slight hint of bitterness. Very pleasant.

The medium thick mouthfeel, gave this a good consistency for this type of beer. However this was also a bit of a problem, along with an abv of 6% this makes this an occasional ale rather than a session beer.

Very nice beer, highly recommended. However I would probably not have more than a couple.

A new beer of Holt, purchased at the Dram Shop, Sheffield. Coming in a 500ml brown bottle, not bottle-conditioned. BB 28/02/2008, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: deep dark mahogany in colour, topped with a fluffy beige froth that dissipates very patiently; moderate carbonation.
S: caramel+brown+crystal malts and longan-fruit tea come hand in hand, plus plenty of brown sugar behind and a touch of sweet citrus fruits. Hops are restrained, and overall the aroma is slightly flat and not as complex as desirable.
T: slightly warming upfront, bringing on board plenty of semi-syrupy barley candy, sweet prunes and other dark stone-fruits, melted brown sugar... slowly a woody and herbal touch of bitter hops develops and lingers at the back, a bit tannic and chewy... The finish is rounded off with a warming throat and a residual sugary touch.
M&D: semi-spritzy and the body is slightly thin for a 6.0%abv. beer. The flavour profile is not inspiring, either. The hop entry is not negligible, so that's a big plus to this otherwise mundane offering.
