500 ml bottle - Pours clear amber with a foamy white head which quickly recedes. Medium carbonation. Smell - malty, very subtle hint of maple. Taste - sweet, malty, maple a little more pronounced than aroma, light bitter finish. Maple injection makes it a little bit unusual.

 

 

 

Botyled I love maple syrup and Holt's beers but it just doesn't fit right with this beer making the flavour a little sickly and the mouthfeel seem thin too

 

 

A: Pours a dark orange body with a great cream head, with good retention.

S: Some Toasted Malts in the nose, with a proeminent maple/woody smell.

T: A little sweet beggining , with a good bitterness following.

M: Low body with little carbonation and good equilibrium between sweetness and bitterness.

O: A good session beer as usually commom in this style, without bitterness or alcohol in excess.

 

500ml Bottle from Morrisons (£1.59): Caramel amber with a clear body and a thumb sized, dome shaped, foamy white head that reduces in size only slightly.

Sweet, biscuit malts and sugar, it is also very bitter on the nose. There is a definite fruit base with cherries and some strongish caramel.

Caramel & biscuit malts with a strong bitter undercurrent and lots of darker fruits. There is some some cherries and sugar with a touch of hops and maple too. Sweet and bitter finish.

Smooth, medium and moderate carbonation. Goes down well and seems stronger than it is.Quite creamy feeling.

Sweet and seemed stronger than the 4.8% abv. on the label. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would with the dark fruits and sugar working well with the bitterness. It was a pleasant tipple.

I have had two beers from Joseph Holt (Humdinger and 1849) and they were both dreadful so I must say I don't have huge hopes for this one!

Appearance: Crystal clear, golden-amber body topped with a large white head that lasts acceptably well but leaves no lace.

Smell: The bottle says "Hopped with Cascade for Aroma" - I'm not expecting that or the maple to be present.
The initial aroma is biscuity malt, sweetness (honey, not maple) and some floral notes. As the beer warms, concentration yields a faint hint of Cascade.

Taste: Pretty standard for an English bitter. Biscuity malt, honey and light hops. There is a reasonable bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This is actually a decent beer when compared to others I have had from Joseph Holt.

 

Pale amber with fast-fading white carpet that speckles. Nose is flinty grain, melted brown sugar and woody hops, all fairly muted. Toast crust and caramel up front with cedar oil and orange oil hops. Golden raisin finish and bitter linger. Chewy, medium, some stick.

Cascade and maple - and it's from Manchester? Don't really get the maple - and I'm not sure I should; doesn't it ferment away almost entirely? A passable pint of bitter and that's about all.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2011. Label mentions winning medals and Canadian maple syrup - mysteriously maple! Let's see...

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A great golden-amber colour with slight haziness. Decent carbonation with big bubbles rising lazily to the surface, and a thick light-brown head that eases away to nothing. The aroma is sweet and distinctly of maple syrup.

The taste is rather sweet and slightly cloying. Obvious notes of maple syrup and some malt undertones. No discernable hops, or much in the way of bitterness. The sweetness of this ale is quite well balanced, although there is a weakly unpleasant aftertaste. Mouthfeel is smooth; a sticky sensation coats the mouth and tongue and leaves a residue behind.

Imperfect but interesting. The sweetness is OK but I wouldn't want more than one in a session. The combination of ale and maple syrup is unusual - I haven't come across anything else like it in the UK. Probably not everyone's cup of tea but worth trying for the novelty. I would have this again, just not too frequently.

This beer is true to style but nothing special. The appearance is amber to ruby with frothy head taste really does have a hint of maple in it but do try Victory Hop Devil Ale for some really nice maple malts.

Mouthfeel is a bit flat but OK for the style and body was rather thinner than medium to full. Smell was kind of neutral...

I got this beer for the name alone thinking it was going to have a much stronger maple flavor. It did not. While this did disappoint me I, am going to try not to let it affect my review, But it probably does!

A- Golden Amber hue, very pretty in the light. Nice fluffy white head that lasted an entire sip.

S- only the slightest maple aroma and I am still not quite sure if that was just my wishful . . . smelling. I hate to give such a generic discription but it just smelled like any typical bitter.

T- Not really any maple flavor. A bit of sweetness but that is covered up by all the hop bitterness. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Sticky, pine resiny flavor, but it was completely unexpected and not what I had wanted when I opened the beer. Still pretty good and surprisingly refreshing.

MF&D- Could have been a whole lot smoother, over carbonated in my opinion. bit of a bite on the back of the throat. I could easily drink another but would probably pick up something different to begin with.

Appearance: Amber-leather brown in color, clear and light with a very volatile, fizzy head with very poor retention.

Smell: Delicate and balanced with a distinct, but far from overpowering top note of maple, matched quite nicely to a fruity base, offering suggestions of cherries, cola, cream soda, and caramel. Hops lend a vague, somewhat leafy spice.

Taste: The hops are noticeable first, countered by a shove of honey sweetness; it's got a nice character overall, executing a careful balancing act between residual maple sugars and hop zest. It's tasty, but the maple flavor is lost, undetectable, and there are no other real nuances to speak of. It tastes a bit like mead with a handful of Fuggles or Nuggets tossed in. The label says it uses Cascades - but you'd never know from tasting it.

Mouthfeel: Soft and dry, a bit thin.

Drinkability: This is basically an average ESB - and that's all it is. The smell of the maple is nice, but it isn't enough to make this stand out. Easy drinkin', but nothing special. Bad with cheese.

500ml brown bottle, this beer is made with cascade hops for aroma, amber malts for colour and a hint of maple for the hell of it.

good solid amber colour, almost clear but a slight cloudiness can be seen. The white head soon disappeared into a wispy semi covering.

The aroma was fairly weak, some hops and barley but little else.

The maple may well be in there, but I couldn't find it, I found the beer sharp, tangy and bitter. In other words, what an English bitter should taste like.

The beer became drier as I drank it and although it wasn't unpleasant, it changed my perception of the beer and I would have prefered it to have got sweeter with the maple making an appearance.

All in all, fine. The maple tag is obviously a gimmick because there was no hint of it within the drink according to my senses, which is a shame, because I wanted to see what it would do to the beer.
