Domitianus is our Barleywine-style ale. Crafted with British pale malt, a touch of British crystal malt, British hops, and our ale yeast, it is bold, malty, and complex. Due to the many hours of boiling, there are complex flavors of raisin, prune, fig, dates, and dark brown sugar.
It is named after Domitianus (51 – 96 CE), who was the last member of the Flavian dynasty. He is known for strengthening Rome’s borders, revaluing Rome’s coinage, and massive building projects in Rome. He was loved by the people and hated by the senate, leading to his assassination in 96 CE.

500ml bottle courtesy of the generous @sulldaddy; first experience w/ Caius Farm
Poured into an Imprint Belgian-style tulip
Bottle #36/168
P deep mahogany w/ a small khaki cap; darker than anticipated; looks good
N a bold, rich blend of toffee, booze, and barrel; super inviting; cognac and cocoa as it warms
T delicious combo of caramel, toffee, raisin, barrel, and plenty of sweet booze; maybe some date as well; rich, complex, and well layered; vanilla, some nuttiness, and cognac/port-like notes as it warms; 15.1% abv is well hidden
Mf med-full bodied and sticky, w/ soft-med to med carb
O exceptional stuff - didn't want it to end; thanks again for the opportunity, Sully!

Sampling a cellar temp 16.9 fl oz waxed and capped bottle poured into my snifter. Picked up at the brewery on release day. This is bottle 27 of 168. Bottle is 2023 vintage, but is also first batch ever released as the beer was barrel aged for 22 months in a combo cognac barrel and a bourbon barrel and then beer was blended back together.
The beer pours a rich cola brown color and rests slightly darker in the glass. Really no light passing through. Small dense creamy beige head of about 1 cm foams up and fades to a sturdy edging that produces dense lattice. A few small swirls spin in the center of the glass but never fully re-form. Looks on the edge of a stout in the glass.
Aroma is robust with some english toffee and hints of brown sugar mixing with raisin and a good hit of bourbon, but not boozy or fusol. I also get a little bit of dark chocolate mixed in, no hop character and as noted, not boozy. Fairly dangerous to not have a warning nose for 15% brew!
First sip reveals a medium to full body with slightly sticky and coating texture. Carbonation is spacious but also has a little prickle to it. Feels like a barleywine. Definitely coats my palate on each swallow.
Flavor is complex with raisin, brown sugar and toffee mixing and also allowing some dark chocolate and bourbon on the back end. Here I also get a little warming and peppery booze on the finish. But its not nearly as much as I would expect from a 15% beer. Sort of wish I had bought a few more of these to lay down for a year. Super tasty as the first entrant into the barleywine world for Caius!
