Large, rocky head. Random larger spots are left behind as the beer recedes in a lumpy fashion. Dirty gold color with a light haze.
Strong caramel nose. A bit grainy with a touch of alcohol to the nose.
The taste surprised me. I expected a malty beer throughout the tasting, but there's a strong bittering hop presence that shows up early in the tasting. Decent body for the style, enhanced by the muted carbonation. There's a true German flavor here, not the Americanized version of a Dortmunder. There's a light burnt flavor with the earthy hop finish. Interestingly, the caramel reappears in the aftertaste. Nicely complex.
