I'm privileged to post the first review of a beer from this brewery, which opened yesterday. Pint pour on draught. It pours a very dark mahogany - nearly ink black - with a half finger of creamy, khaki-colored head that dissipated slowly leaving thick rings of lacing. It's an attractive pour. The smell may suffer a bit from the temperature but there is roasted malt, baker's chocolate, leather, and tobacco smoke. Its taste is spot on for the style with lots of dark chocolate up front but it's not overly sweet. There follows burnt nuts and earthy char, and hints of fresh coffee, anise, and tobacco. There is mild bitterness throughout. Great depth of flavor. The mouth feel is nicely creamy, pillowy, with pleasant carbonation, and it drinks easily at 8% ABV. Overall, I'm very impressed by my first beer from this newly-opened brewery. It's a very good rendition of one of my favorite styles. I hope Autodidact cans it.
