a unique iteration of the irish stout, way more robust on the body and the general dark grain intensity than anticipated, and full of middle malt nuance, really quite a unique beer, and it drinks heavy for its abv, shocked its this low. my first from these guys. served in a chalice which makes sense. its obsidian black and shiny, relatively viscous, and without the more restrained luster i am used to in the style. short head, a patchy ring of brown bubbles is all. the nose is strange, roasty and dark, coffee notes for sure and definite licorice spice to me, a cola note, some molasses sweetness, and less from the yeast than i usually look for in these. the flavor follows, sweeter through most of it than is common, but it also works, long and sort of tarry on the palate, a coffee note but also so much more, cocoa and chocolate syrup, licorice root, bitter and even medicinal elements, toffee, and very little from the ferment. definitely not as light and dry, or as creamy, as i generally like these to be, not really true to style at all, but its nice stout, uniquely flavored and even though a little amateur around the edges, a nice offering overall, unlike any in recent memory. full feeling, a little under carbonated, big in the belly and long on the palate. creative and weird, id love to know more about it, seems like a huge grain bill for a beer this low in alcohol...
