A very well done bitter, surprising coming from the Mark James group, who usually does beers well but not really well.
Slightly hazy copper-bronze colour with a thin head. A bit more subdued in tone than some of the English greats or even really good Canadian bitters, and more towards the bronze side.
Good, complex British malt smell with a zest, bitter hop finish. Citrus, yeast and grassy notes.
Hops are very prominent in the taste, but they're not out of control. The malts, while not as strong as they could be provide a counter-weight to the bitter hop flavour. Certainly more bitter than one would expect from an ESB, but a enjoyable and unique flavour.
A very nice beer, and exceptionally well done for the MJ group. Nice with a meal or by itself.
