Deciduous - 5.4% Smoked Lager

A beautiful little smoked lager that is really perfect for this cooler weather. We brewed this one with German pilsner and Munich malts and an appropriate heap of smoked barley. It was hopped with Tettnanger and Hersbrucker and fermented slowly and coldly. We find notes of scratchy sweaters by the campfire, apples cooking, dried herbs hanging, pancakes with crispy edges, and a few peppercorns.

16oz can purchased from the fridge directly from the brewery as part of a mixed 4-pack for $20. Not sure when this was canned, but with this type of beer it shouldn't matter.

Look: Nice golden color with excellent clarity. There was a billowy two fingered, large-bubbled, whitish head that eventually receded to a thin layer. Then I topped it off to give it a bit more oomph and it's holding nicely. Carbonation is lively and rising up the glass at a fast pace.

Smell: Nice earthy aromas. I do get a nice smoke note on the finish. It's not particularly strong yet it is unmistakable. I'm also getting a nice lemony citrus note that is very clean and crisp. Some crisp pear notes also.

Taste: Oh so flavorful. The smoke really comes through on the palate and it is in a very balanced way though. Up front, I get the smoke along with lemony notes and crisp pear. I also get nice malty notes of vanilla wafers and tea biscuits. The finish is dry, oh so dry, with an almost tannic dryness. I think that could be the smoke talking, in that the smoked malt is drying out the palate a bit extra. Nice peppery finish, very refreshing and drinkable. The finish has a moderate bitterness that also gives it great drinkability.

Feel: Nicely carbonated and the beer has a very soft, creamy body. Medium plus body.

Overall: It's delicious. I've been holding onto this for a while and just couldn't find the right time to drink it until now...not sure why because it's always the right time for a smoked lager! It is really hitting the spot.

16oz can into a pint glass. Canned in November 2023, so 6 months old.

Nice looking beer. Golden yellow body, small bright white head, specks of lacing. Smoky aroma of course. On tasting, mild smoke, slightly sweet, very clean. Finish is a decreasing smoke on a sweet bed.

Overall, nicely done. If you want something a little lighter than Aecht's beers, this would do very nicely.

Drinking from the can, look based off the tap I had at F&M right before the new year and grabbed a pack to go. Canned in November 2023, no day stated. Has a bit more “bacon” in the taste than the tap I had. A nice lager that you can still taste beneath the smoky flavors.

Subtle smoke, but a nicely flavorful light lager that goes down east.

No canning date (released on 12/15/2022); consumed on 4/11/2023

Pours a vaguely clouded honey-gold body capped with two and a half fingers of fluffy, eggshell-white foam; decent head retention leaves a slim layer of cap, a larger, sudsy collar, and an ample array of soapy, webby lacing spread across the walls of the glass.

Aromas of fresh golden biscuits find a hint of honeyed smoke culminating with tones of smoked ham at the front of the bouquet, leaving edges of orange zest lingering through medicine cabinet sensations as white toast pronounces on the close.

Taste opens to waxy hay and mineralic lager yeast sporting a grassy edge, steadily embracing smoked pork through the mid-palate contrasted by grapefruit and mandarin peels over the back end.

Mouthfeel brings a light body and a fluffy spritz of moderate-full carbonation, a prickly roast undertone lingering beneath a taut, mineralic gloss that cleans through the back end and dries steadily into the finish.

A delicate smoke extends throughout, engaging with a clever, fruity interplay; quaintly refined profile and balanced to a natural approachability.
