Transitioning to a Hefeweizen from Salt Lake City, I'm using a Weizen glass and serving the beer at 44 degrees. The pour creates a frothy and creamy two-fingered white head with fair retention. The color, pale straw with light golden hues, is charted around SRM 4, and the clarity is clear, with a few lazy carbonation bubbles. While average for this style, the appearance holds its own unique charm.
Nosing the glass, I smell stale toasted wheat and floral esters. I searched the glass for the banana and cloves, yet I did not find the familiar aromas accompanying this beer style. Sadly, the wheat is the only aroma with a faint hop note, a disappointing nose.
The taste did not improve; I still tasted wheat with a light floral blossom. The absence of bananas is alarming for a hefeweizen.
The mouthfeel is creamy and finishes smooth, akin to a gentle breeze on a summer day. The beer's medium body provides a satisfying weight on the palate, and its low carbonation contributes to its smooth finish.
While enjoyable, the beer should embody the classic hefeweizen taste. It is missing the distinct notes of banana and cloves typically associated with this style. This deviation may disappoint those seeking a traditional hefeweizen experience. My review will reflect this observation and the disappointment it may bring to those with a more traditional palate.
