This special Double Dry Hopped tropical fruit-forward hoptastic brew has nearly thirty pounds of Cryo Mosaic and Waimea hops and TONS of love. The recipe is Maui Brewing’s Kokua Project brew – one beer brewed by many – and the profits from our sales will be donated to relief from the wildfires. We named our take on Maui’s recipe after the Hawaiian words for “warriors of the sea.”

Thick and creamy white head. Light golden color, with a very slight haze, for the look. Fruity, grapefruit aroma with a little sweet malt note. Firm, grapefruit peel flavor kick, with a light malt body, trailing behind, for the taste.

Poured from a growler into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a lightly hazy, light to medium golden amber with a three finger white head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of pale malt, citrus and tropical fruit hops, orange, mixed tropical fruit with pineapple dominant and hint of catty dankness. Flavor is pale malt, citrus and fruit hops, grapefruit, orange, melon and mild mango; grapefruit rind bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I hesitated on this one due to the quite low ABV, which often attenuates the flavor density, but I'm a sucker for good causes and the Maui hurricane support donation was a nice one. Glad I sprung for it. Although it is lighter in flavor than my usual round of IPAs, it has a quite satisfactory level of flavor. The hop bill is nice. The aroma led me to believe it would have more hazy style tropical fruit, but that element is secondary to a fine citrus character. The body has a nice, lightly creamy mouth feel that is better than I expected from a session style ale. I'm pleasantly surprised by this one, a great introduction to the new-to-me area brewery. If I was looking for a session IPA, I'd get this again in a heartbeat, although it looks like a one-off.
