Hazy Pale Ale, basically a session Hazy IPA. Not exactly the easiest style, Hazies really benefit from at least 6.5% abv in my opinion, and at 4.9% it has a lot of work to do. 16 oz can into an IPA glass, though I've had it in a tulip as well which was a better choice.
Look is not great. Kind of an unappealing pale copper, and all the sediment that makes up a hazy ale is lying at the bottom of the can. Since it's a 16 oz, you need to actually drink a few sips before pouring the entire thing, and so at first I thought it was totally mislabeled. Even when you do get the sediment in there, it just floats around awkwardly instead of fully mixing into the beer. On the other hand, there is a great rocky head and good lacing, so they get points for that.
Smell is typical of a hazy. Very bright and floral, lots of fruit notes going on. This one is primarily stone fruits, peach and plum, mixed with blood orange. Hint of booziness which is highly unusual for such a low abv, but it actually works as hazy's should have a slight alcoholic note in my opinion.
More surprising is that the taste manages to capture most of what is going on in the aroma, though it's not as strong as it would be in a heavier beer. Easy to drink I suppose, but it's honestly way too fruity for a session ale in my opinion. I really only drink a hazy when I want a fruity hoppy bruiser, and this doesn't deliver on that either. Moderately bitter, more than most of the gross fruit bombs that have been appearing lately. As with many IPAs, this is a headache inducer, still never quite understood why that happens.
Feel is also suffering from the low abv. Slightly watery, moderate-low carbonation, and not nearly as silky as a hazy should be.
Nice on a hot day if you have nothing else going on, and if you only plan on drinking one beer. But Vortex should consider brewing it at a higher strength. This was a gift and I probably would not buy myself, though hazy's really aren't my thing to begin with. I see no reason why I'd drink this instead of something like Nimble Giant.
