If you know Monkless, you know we’re not known for brewing small beers - that said, we wanted a clean sessionable beer to share as the warm summer months approached us. We were inspired by the Trappist tradition of the Belgian Single. Brother’s Bier is a SMaSH beer brewed from Pilsen malt and Sterling hops, and fermented to a nice dry finish with our traditional Trappist yeast strain. A late hop addition of Sterling adds a bit of spicy, citrusy hop aroma and flavor to the quintessential fruity-spicy yeast character of a classic Belgian Single.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a light to moderately hazy light golden amber with a fine, three finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of pale and candi malt, fruity Belgian yeast, light stone fruit, mixed citrus and a hint of floral hops. Flavor is pale and bready malt, Belgian yeast, lemon, mild light stone fruit, clove and light grassy and floral hops in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. Although the flavor is somewhat attenuated for a pale ale, it is more than sufficient for the light table beer that apparently influenced this. It really does taste like a mild, but well flavored Belgian style ale that would be wonderful with a simple meal. The hops are a bit more forward than in in traditional Belgian pale ales, but have a winning citrusy brightness with nice light floral notes. I hope this is regularly available in the future in our market; I would love to see this offered on restaurant menus to accompany meals. Nicely done.

Look: Clear medium orange with a silky, off-white head that rapidly forms and settles to a lid, leaving good lacing behind
Aroma: Freshly baked bread, Belgian yeast, some fruity esters, straw, floral hop notes, Pilsner malt, and spicy notes
Taste: Starts off with a straw and yeast combo that is quite pleasant as waves of bready and Pilsner malt crash in to join. Light citrus, spicy notes, and fruity esters that lean pear and apple follow, blend with the malt, and dance nicely through the close
Mouthfeel: Full, clean, medium-high carbonation, and slightly soft on the finish – very Weissbier-esque I must say
Overall: I dig it. This is a good and tasty no-nonsense Belgian ale that isn’t too crazy as to be unapproachable by non-Belgian fans, but also has a lot going on in the flavor/aroma department that does appeal to Belgian fans. I love what these folks do and put out and chalk this up to another good one

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours orange yellow with a fluffy white head. Smells of sweet wheat and Belgian yeast. Tastes of wheat and slight fruit. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Pours an almost clear golden straw with a finger of foamy head that slowly settles to a thin ring with plenty of lacing. Aroma of spice, yeast and citrus. Spicy tail. Nice.

500ml can from Brewers Haven. Cloudy pale golden pour, thin creamy white head. Aroma is yeasty, sourdough, grassy, hint of lemon. Taste is focused on the Belgian yeast, bready malts. Dries out towards the finish, slightly chalky. Light fruity notes.

Bought one at Woodman's Kenosha and should've bought two. While refreshing by itself, I would like to try Monkless' single at the table to compare it to one that real monks drink.
I like the SMaSH concept (Single Malt and Single Hop.) Keeps it simple and lets the food create the culinary pleasure also. Brother's Bier Looks slightly above average (I'd like more foam and active protein.) Smells produce a full citrus bouquet. Tastes are well-balanced: the sweet malts are countered just enough by the hops to create more salivation... so it should be more than good at the table. Cleansing and refreshing in my mouth.
I've thought from a few past brews that Monkless is not on a trajectory to greatness, say, like Ommegang. (Only two of the six I've rated from Monkless were above BA's average.) But, I'm liking Monkless more .... particularly after enjoying this simple and fulfilling BPA.

Somewhat cloudy sunny yellow body with a pearl white head with spotted lacing. Belgian yeast with citrus and floral hops in the nose. Taste follows this same scheme, but the ending is hop dominated, very new world take on the style, still the citrus and yeast go nicely together. Light but not thin at all, hops and yeast textures abound with decent crispness, dryness and a kiss of paleness. Fun new world belgian single for a happy hour near you

Clear golden amber brew with plenty of foam in the Kasteel chalice. Surprising body for the light-weight style. Even tastes malty with the sweet estery yeast flavors. Some grainy flavors of cereal and cornbread. Fruity aroma with a whiff of lemon peel.
Rich flavor but the yeasty taste is just right. Warm with a sweet sensation, but the finish is the usual dry Belgian. You could gulp this by the stein, but it's very tasty to sip slowly as well. From the 19.2 oz can purchased at Johns Marketplace.

A: The beer is clear and a bit pale yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a half finger high head covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of spicy hops are present in the nose along with notes of floral and herbal hops.
T: The taste follows the smell and is very much dominated by flavors from the hops. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The finish has some dryness.
O: This beer has nice aromas and flavors imparted by the hops and is easy to drink.
