473 mL can, Day 17 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; no canning date and served barely chilled. Now we're talking: a winter warmer from a brewery I've never even heard of. That's what beer advent calendars are all about.

Pours a deep, clear copper amber colour, producing an inch of soapy, khaki-coloured head that wilts within three minutes or so. A wide, frothy collar is left surrounding a filmy cap, with respectable lace deposition after each sip. Spicy aroma of nutmeg, ginger snap and cinnamon, with brown sugar and molasses also figuring in prominently. Toasted, bready malts underneath, with a little bit of a boozy fruitcake thing going on, too.

The flavour profile is sweet, malty and a little warming, with a hefty helping of Christmas baking spices thrown into the mix. Toasted, bready malts and brown sugar come through initially, joined by dried fruits, cinnamon and ginger by mid-sip; the bite from the ginger is mild to moderate. Cinnamon and nutmeg run roughshod over the tail end, which also features some molasses and boozy fruitcake sweetness; nutmeg and cinnamon loiter long into the aftertaste. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, with low carbonation that gently nudges the palate; its mouthfeel is smooth and satisfying. I didn't find this especially drinkable: its boozy-sweetness combined with the overused cinnamon/nutmeg result in a bit of a slog during the latter half of the session.

Final Grade: 3.44, a B-. Winter warmers are a style that has always been seriously underrepresented around here: they're not common at the LCBO, and most of my local breweries don't bother. Sadly, Bridge Masters' take on the style was not really my cup of tea - too much spice, if I'm being honest. In all fairness, I tend to prefer the British-inspired examples of this style over the spice-heavy Americanized equivalent... and Ginger Coloured Glasses is most definitely the latter. I wouldn't have minded more ginger, but too much nutmeg is a real problem if you're not a colonial trading company. Glad I had the chance to try it, anyhow.
