Our base imperial pastry stout, Viator Obscura (Latin for “dark traveler”), gets a complex grist bill with caramel, chocolate, and roasted malts before a 3 hour boil boosts our potential ABV and caramelizes the extracted sugars. Balancing hops are added to the boil and long, cool fermentation presents a smooth, chocolatey and sweet base stout.

BA Viator Obscura Tiple Chocolate is a variant that was aged 18 months in Elijah Craig 18 Year Bourbon barrels before being conditioned on cacao nibs, cacao husks and cocoa powder.

16.9 ounce dark blue wax capped bottle, big thanks to Brutaltruth for this one! Served in a BeerAdvocate chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch or so tan head that didn't stay around for too long. Small amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like roasted malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, caramel and some bourbon. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's the addition of some dark bread, oak, coffee, chocolate fudge and some blackberry flavors. I think the chocolate stands out here compared to the other flavors without overpowering them. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's syrupy and smooth with a moderate amount of carbonation. I liked this one a lot, but recommend it more to people who like chocolate imperial stouts!

From the 1 pt 9 fl oz bottle in a snifter. This BEAST pours a rich obsidian with a
moderate head of khaki foam that settles to a thin ring that dissipates quickly
but she has some nice legs! Nose of bourbon, vanilla, brulee, dark cocoa,
astringent booze, moderate char, and subtle dark berry notes. Flavors....wow.
Dark coca and brulee dance about waves of bourbon, oak, moderately rich vanilla,
nice char, dark coffee, and a melange of dark berry notes. Mouth feel is full, smooth,
rich, moderately coating, nicely (very) warming, and finishing with a bitter malt note that
is moderately dry and exceptionally balanced!

Overall---This brewery continues to impress! They know the 3 important
parts of brewing.....balance, balance, and balance. Exceptional! A pastry stout
that is not cloying but rich! Fantastic....and close to home to boot!

Cheers!
