Looks decent, but kind of a bust after that. Subdued aroma, odd flavour and mouthfeel. Sweet, with a lime flavoured bitterness. Nothing really pops, nothing really screams key lime pie. Mostly a confused muddle.

This would be a great summer beer. Sweet and tangy lime with a creamy background, just like the ice cream it’s based on. It’s one of the better milkshake IPAs I’ve tried.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $3.95 CDN. Review from notes.

Appearance - Hazy, milky golden color with one finger of head that recedes fairly quick. Some visible carbonation through the turbidity.

Smell - limes are prominent, with some pastry sweetness in behind, mixed in with lemon and other generally bitter citrus fruit.

Taste - Close to the nose, but with significantly more sweetness. The graham cracker pastry crust and lime combo (with meringue like sweetness for a moment or two) is pretty authentic, but after repeated sips the sweetness is a bit overpowering. It does taste quite a bit like key lime pie.

Mouthfeel - Fairly dense, heavy bodied for what otherwise makes for an interesting one-off especially in the summer. Carbonation is middling and finish is thick.

Overall - As a one off this is pretty decent an interesting take on key lime pie, but the sweetness builds a bit too much to make more than one enjoyable. Well worth a try if you like key lime pie.

473 mL can from the LCBO; 'freshest by' Jun 30 2020 and served slightly chilled. The milk and the wheat aren't much of a stretch, but this is the first time I've ever seen a beer label warn that it may contain eggs, tree nuts, peanuts or soy.

Pours a hazy apricot yellow colour, sporting one finger of foamy white head that holds itself together for two minutes or so. A frothy collar remains, with little else to speak of, including lace; a bit dull visually speaking. I'm getting lime zest, milk sugar and pastry crust on the nose, overlying lesser notes of grapefruit, lemon and orchard fruit.

Not bad - it's got a pleasing mixture of sweet and sour flavours, though I wouldn't say it comes together all that well at the end of the sip. Creamy lactose sweetness and lime zest come through at first, soon joined by notes of graham cracker and pastry crust; hints of lemon, vanilla and limeade crop up towards the finish, preceding a pie-like, slightly sweet aftertaste that doesn't linger for long. Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that softly prickles the tongue; feels smooth and fulfilling in the mouth. Finishing one glass is easy enough, but I wouldn't consider this a prime session candidate.

Final Grade: 3.68, a B grade. Muskoka's Key Lime Pie isn't perfect, but I enjoyed it enough to give it an unenthusiastic thumbs up. It deserves credit for more or less approximating the flavours that it boasts in its name: it does taste pretty much like a key lime cream pie, but at the end of the day, I don't think this is something I'd want to drink all that frequently... though I suspect I'd really enjoy the Kawartha Dairy ice cream flavour it's based upon. Worth trying at least once.
