750 mL bottle from the LCBO; packaged Aug 19 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep brownish-black colour with ruby red highlights, topped with one finger of dense, creamy, light tan-coloured head that seeps off within ninety seconds or so. In the process, it drapes the glass with a smooth, even coat of lacing, with a tight collar also remaining in place. Sweet and chocolatey on the nose - I'm getting cocoa, molasses and vanilla, with hints of dark fruit, ethanol, coconut and toasted malt.
A solid imperial porter that represents its namesake pretty well IMO - moderately sweet at the forefront, with brown sugar, chocolate syrup and a touch of treacle. Cacao nibs by the bushel, with vanilla also coming through clearly by mid-sip; hints of raisin, almond and coconut towards the finish, followed by a slightly boozy aftertaste with more cocoa, coconut, roastiness and a hint of chocolate cake. Medium-full in body, with low carbonation that weakly brushes against the tongue; feels smooth and soft, which I think suits the theme of this beer perfectly. Fair drinkability, given its strength and dessert-like nature.
Final Grade: 4.1, an A-. Nanaimo Bar Imperial Porter is a fine brew that I'd recommend to any fans of dessert, pastry, and/or sweet stouts. The cocoa really pops, the vanilla complements it beautifully, and then the hints of coconut and almond complete the illusion - like eating a real nanaimo bar (soaked in booze). The price of admission is a bit steep, I'll give you that, but if you enjoy chocolate/cocoa in your beer, then it's probably worth it. One of Muskoka's best porters (or stouts) to date, and a brew that they, together with Vancouver Island Brewing, should be quite proud of.

Bottle: Poured a black color porter with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate notes with some chocolate notes and sweet pastry notes with light coffee notes. Taste is also a mix of roasted malt notes with some chocolate notes, some light coffee and with sweet pastry light notes. Body is a bit thin for style with good carbonation. OK for style but lacks a creamy full body.

750ml bottle served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase for $15.95.
Appearance- near black in the glass, capped with a finger plus of fluffy and reasonably long lasting tan head. Nondescript lacing but still looks good.
Smell-sweet and sugary. Some chocolate, marshmallow and sweet Nanaimo filling. Not sure how they nailed the aroma but they did. Pretty good intensity too.
Taste- sweet with caramel and fudge up front, chocolate accents then booze. Molasses comes in a big way then finishes with a wonderful dark chocolate flavour. Rather like a Nanaimo bar, but a little less sweet thankfully and that adds to its deliciousness. Booze is present but pretty well hidden.
Mouthfeel- rich and full bodied, moderately light carbonation which fits the velvety and textured body to a T. Not cloying.
Overall - this is how to do a pastry stout. Rich and intense, bold flavours but not oversweet, boozy but not overly so, everything here hits the flavour and aroma brief, but at no point is it too much. Now definitely a good beer to share given the size of the bottle, but well worth the price for a beer inspired by one of the distinctly Canadian sweets out there.
