Greetings from Belgium! This Golden Strong Ale is the first in a series of collaborations with breweries from around the world. We teamed up with Het Nest Brouwerij from Turnhout, Belgium where tradition meets innovation. We incorporated coriander seeds and Belgian Candi Sugar, then fermented at a warmer temperature than usual for an authentic Belgian flavour.

Pours pale gold lightly hazed. The small head diminishes quickly. Bready, herbal notes in the nose. Cloves and lemon too. The taste is malty with some fusel alcohol and candy sugar sweetness. The mouthfeel is full bodied with plenty of carbonation. Off dry finish with fruity Belgian yeast esters and some bready malts.

A pretty nice Belgian Strong Ale but a bit boozy for the strength.

473 ml can served cold into an oversized wine glass. LCBO purchase for $3.95 CDN. Freshest by July 6, 2022.

Appearance - Pretty clear, vibrant golden color with lots of bubbles and a finger plus of sparkling white head.

Smell - Some floral notes, a touch of apple skin and lots of bread with some Belgian yeast and candi sugar making an appearance . Not a super intense nose for nearing 8% ABV,

Taste - Semi sweet, some bread, candi sugar and a hint of orchard fruit, namely peach, plum and apple. Fairly sweet through with a slight bittering turn at the end. Possibly traces of honey.

Mouthfeel - Medium-full body, crisp an assertive carbonation, but lacking a touch relative to style. A little bit stickier on the whole.

Overall - Solid Belgian Style Ale, just a bit sticky and lacking in intensity just a little bit compared to the true greats of the style. Still an eminently drinkable brew for a not well represented style locally.

473 mL can from the LCBO; 'freshest by' Jul 6 2022 and served slightly chilled. Useless true fact: this is officially my 2000th review of a Canadian-made beer. Cheers, eh?

Pours a lightly fogged golden-blonde colour, generating two fingers of puffy, foamy white head that dissipates over the course of the next five minutes or so. It leaves behind a delicate swath of sticky lace, in addition to a generous collar of creamy suds - looks good to me. A little sugary on the nose, with hints of graininess, some floral/herbal notes, and a faint whiff of coriander.

It's pretty tasty stuff - sweeter than I'd prefer from this style specifically, but I can deal with that. I'm tasting bready malts, grains and candi sugar, with suggestions of pear and apricot preceding a yeasty, moderately spicy back end. The coriander figures in prominently, with hints of grassy, herbal hops and clove; the abv is discernible, but only barely. Finishes sweet with more candi sugar, spiciness and yeast, but the aftertaste does dry things off a bit. More than medium-bodied, with lively carbonation that lends a firm prickliness to each sip; feels crisp and invigorating on the tongue. For all my kvetching, it's surprisingly drinkable for a brew that is nearly 8%.

Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. When I think "Belgian-style beer", Muskoka isn't the first Ontario brewery that comes to mind, but I suppose I didn't mind their Greetings From Belgium. No, it's not as outstanding and/or refined as the big names in this style, but I'll still say it's a passable interpretation with only a few minor flaws for me to gripe about - namely, the residual candi sugar sweetness bugs me, and (more vaguely) its lack of complexity. It's worth a try while it's available, but given that Duvel is basically the same price per mL, I wouldn't call this a go-to option.

Pours a beautiful gold colour, transparent with visible bubbles. Light spicy notes on the smell. The taste has the usual spicy characteristics of a Belgian ale, although quite muted, and a bit of tartness. This would be a good introduction beer to the Belgian style
