473 mL can from the LCBO, one of six different beers included in their most recent Survival Pack. Best before Sep 23 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale yellow colour, topped off with nearly two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that dissipates within five minutes' time. It leaves behind a band of delicate lace, as well as a wide, creamy collar and filmy cap - looks as expected for a wit. The aroma is relatively muted, offering up hints of orange zest interspersed with coriander, grainy wheat and appleskin.
It's a well-made witbier - just the right mix of wheaty grains & bready malt sweetness, combined with distinct notes of coriander and orange zest. Interspersed within are hints of bruised apples, banana and peppery spiciness, with a yeasty conclusion that doesn't skimp on the orange peel. Off-dry aftertaste with some yeastiness. Medium-light in body, with lively carbonation that adds some crispness to this white beer's smooth, fulfilling mouthfeel. I could easily drink a couple of these on the back patio, and doubt I'd tire of it.
Final Grade: 3.96, a B+. Wit Out A Paddle isn't the flashiest brew, but I do think it's a really good witbier. The citrus peel and coriander shine through, but the base wheat ale is also robust and flavourful, making for a completely satisfying summer quaff. I suspect this will end up being an LCBO one-off, but if they *do* make this into a summer seasonal I'd keep buying it for as long as it's available. Almost on par with Hoegaarden, which is high praise coming from this beer geek.
