Survival fundamentals include masterful navigation, foraging skills, and a beer to enjoy when setting up camp. OK we made that last one up, but after a day on the trails, why forage for fruit when you can get a dose with our Kiwi Kölsch? Bright, fruity flavours and a clean finish make this beer the perfect refresher after a day of adventuring. Just make sure you don't feed the wildlife... no matter how much they may beg for a delicious Kiwi Kölsch!

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from their Survival Pack from my favourite The Beer Store on Goyeau St. in nearby downtown Windsor. My third beer from the Bracebridge, ON brewery.

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Muskoka's latest Survival mixed pack. Dated Mar 13 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy pale golden colour, sporting an inch-thick cap of foamy white suds that recedes over the next three or four minutes. Afterwards, a wavering coat of lace clings to the glass above a thick collar of suds - it's a nice-looking glass of beer. The aroma offers up hints of sourdough bread, green apples and white grapes paired with a clean, grainy malt backbone; only vaguely fruity when it's still cold, but developing more of a tangy pineapple twang as the glass warms.
I actually really like this beer, considerably more than I was expecting to. The clean, grainy malt and vinous white grape flavours of the kölsch match up beautifully with the slightly tart, tangy, understated notes of kiwi, reminiscent of strawberry and pineapple. Hints of herbal, grassy hops tie up the back end, with a mildly tangy aftertaste of strawberry and grainy malts that quickly fades to dry. Light in body with moderate carbonation; a little crisp with some frothiness. Super crushable.
Final Grade: 3.92, a B+. I was skeptical at first glance, but Muskoka's Kiwi Kölsch turned out to be a real winner: kiwi is a clever fruit to pair with kölsch, and not merely for its alliterative benefits. The mellow, slightly tangy flavour of kiwifruit is both complementary and subtle - it neither overwhelms nor distracts from the kölsch flavours, but rather co-operates with and enhances them. I liked this more than their peach kölsch, and it has real potential as a daily summer thirst-quencher with broad appeal. If they can get this into the LCBO as a single, I'll totally be buying some more.
