Jim Baird Adventurer's Windbound Campfire Pilsner is a crisp & easy-drinking, lightly smoked lager. The bready backbone is balanced by earthy hops, with just hint of smoke, reminiscent of unwinding by the campfire after a hard day’s paddle. 15 IBU

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Muskoka's latest Survival Pack; dated Mar 18 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a bright, sunny golden yellow colour, boasting nearly two fingers of fluffy, soapy white head that melts away within two or three minutes. A generous collar of creamy suds survives, along with a patchy cap and a quarter-inch coat of lace clinging to the glass. Slight smoke on the nose, with hints of spicy hops, black pepper, grainy malts and rye bread.
The flavour profile is odd but intriguing, the smoked malts imparting a savoury sort of quality that I can only compare to cured, spiced meat. There's also rye bread, grainy malts, apples and sourdough sweetness, finishing with herbal hops and peppery spice; the aforementioned smokey/savoury note persists in the background throughout, and also briefly into the aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with middling carbonation that brushes briskly across the palate; smooth mouthfeel. Surprisingly refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.88, a B+. I was going to add this as a pilsner, but after one sip it became clear that the smoked malts are prominent enough to warrant alternative classification. I also toyed with grätzer, but those tend to be on the lighter side. Smoked beer is an adequate catch-all that I presume exists specifically for grey-area cases such as Windbound Campfire Pilsner. No, it's not nearly as smokey as a rauchbier, but I doubt you'll be mistaking this for a Bitburger or an Urquell. This is one of those love it or hate it brews, and I'm firmly in the first camp - sell this as a single and I'll be all over it during BBQ season.
