this is exactly what i expected it to be, smooth and well made, kind of basic, but of a very fine quality, its their calling card already, and they have applied it to this dark ale rather effectively, not too much beer in the glass here for warm sunny spring weather, i was quite pleased with it. definitely more brown than black, reddish chestnut edges in the light, short airy tan head, looks active for the style and like a lighter take overall. the aroma has good roast to it, dry cocoa, raisin and a long fruity middle, less bitterness and intensity on the low end than most, some faintly yeasty character, almost english to me, chocolate and dark bread too, tidy. the flavor has some sweetness up front, nuttiness in the center, and cocoa without heavy richness through the back end, nice layering of the grains, not too heavy handed on the specialty dark stuff or malted roasted barley, but this is not hurting for it or out of balance, definitely has some brown ale qualities. i get light smoke, a hint of caramel like the boil could have been long, hazelnut, and bran muffin. pleasant and drinkable, airy with a high amount of carbonation for the style, smooth the whole way, and i think rather professional overall. great to see so many beers on tap on our most recent visit, they have really expanded their offerings!

Draft at brewery. Black pour, thin brown head. Roasty aroma with a little bitterness. Taste is roasty, bitter, with minor fruity flavors that recalls a foreign stout. Full bodied.
