In the spirit of collaboration and for the love of craft beer, three local breweries and San Diego Magazine partnered on a new collection for its “Best of San Diego” issue. This traditional Berliner Weisse was brewed and canned by Fall Brewing. Fermented long and cold with fresh watermelon added for a bright fruity flavor.

Had the Eppig Hoppy Pilsner (4.04) and the Coronado IPA (3.88) in the last few weeks, but was excited to try the watermelon sour Best of San Diego beer. Not that a big fan of Fall so far, mainly because of the outrageous can prices for West Coast IPAs, but still was very interested in this one. Back of the can read, “In the spirit of collaboration and for the love of craft beer, three local breweries and San Diego Magazine partnered on a new collection for its “Best of San Diego” issue. This traditional Berliner Weisse was brewed and canned by Fall Brewing. Fermented long and cold with fresh watermelon added for a bright fruity flavor. Also try the IPA by Coronado Brewing Company and Hoppy Pilsner by Eppig Brewing. Drink responsibly.” Another description I found online read, “We brewed a traditional kettle sour, untraditionally lagered with a Czech lager yeast, filtered then fruited with 29 locally grown watermelons to sweeten and balance the tart flavors. A light and crisp crusher that pairs perfectly with calling in sick to lay by the pool.”

Poured an amber semi-clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of fizzy off-white head. Lots of bubble streams coming up along the sides of the glass at different speeds, some unbelievably fast and others creeping up super slow. Below average watery lacing. Very bad retention. (Sight - 3.25)

Smelled watermelon, watermelon rind, passion fruit, plum, grape and grass. God watermelon and some earthier yeast from the can. (Smell - 4.00)

Tasted watermelon, watermelon rind, passion fruit, grape, plum and grass. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, clean finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Wow. Was really surprised at how much I liked this. So damn good for this hot day. (Overall - 4.25)
