473 mL can from the brewpub; no canning date and served barely chilled.
Pours a deep copper-brown colour with orange-amber highlights; gathered atop is more than an inch of foamy, light beige-coloured head that lasts for nearly five minutes. A respectable swath of messy, spidery lace is left in its wake as it drops down to a creamy collar and filmy cap - looks good so far. The aroma is malty, with hints of bread, toffee, toasted grains, earthy, dirty hops and something fruity, e.g. cherries in syrup.
It's alright - more than a touch sweeter than I prefer my red ales, but not far off from what I'd expect of an Irish red. Bready malts, caramelized sugars and toffee sweetness come through, as do suggestions of toasted grains, nuts and dried orchard fruits. Finishes sweet, with dried fruits, toffee and toasted malts lasting into the aftertaste, which lingers on the taste buds after each sip. Medium-light in body, with average carbonation that gently prickles the tongue; smooth mouthfeel, with decent drinkability for its strength.
Final Grade: 3.42, a B-. Torched Brewing's Red Ale is adequate, at least if you enjoy malty ambers. I will admit that sweet amber/red ales - Irish or otherwise - have not been my cup of tea for a very long time, so this beer was working uphill to start with. I might've really liked this beer in 2008, when I still thought Rickard's Red was neat, but these days my tastes have drifted far away from this template. I wouldn't turn it down, but I won't deliberately look for more.
