Tonewood Brewing "Saison"
$4/12 fl. oz. at the brewery on 11/16/17
Notes: Clear golden body beneath a bright white head that holds well and leaves better than average lacing behind. The aroma offers some grainy golden malt and mildly phenolic and fruity yeastiness, and the flavor follows. There's a pleasant note of black pepper that helps the median bitterness to balance it and leaves a spicy, peppery, and dry finish. It's medium-light in body and crisp with a standard, fine-bubbled carbonation that gently zests the tongue. As saisons go this is more of an authentic saison that harkens back to the days when it would be brewed as a thirst quencher for workers in the field. It is 5.4% ABV which is certainly stronger than it would have been back then, but it's not bumped up beyond that, or enhanced with different grains other than the standard Pilsner with a little bit of something (usually Vienna malt) to give it a little girth. It's refreshing and easy to drink while remaining interesting. Nicely done.

This was a really nicely done Saison. Not many people can perfect a saison in the early stages of their practice but Tonewood has created a great summer drinker. Beer was dry and crisp with nice under laying tones of lemon with mild peppercorn flavors swirling around. Nicely put together.
