Tonewood Brewing - Barrington

 

(12 oz can, hey Patsy 08/23/24; purchased six-pack from their Barrington location 2 weeks ago... poured into a way-too-big Tonewood lager glass)

L: clear, gold liquid with some light powdery sediment suspended; curiously little foam and very little lace... looks tired

S: Saaz character leaps out, lemon-pine and wet petals, touch of toasted sugar accent on the lightly-nutty grassy edge to the malt... faint hint of sulfur with a subtle yeastiness later emerging, but predominantly a strict hop-malt affair; earthy

T: earthy, burlap-like flavor coloring the zippy hop at the top of the palate, while the underside has at first a flash of worty, doughy malt sweetness which soon morphs into a hearty bread expression in the finish and more so in the aftertaste... overall, it's rather dry with a mellow bitterness but a bold, moderately aggressive herbal hop spice which maintains some intensity and peppery bite long after even only the first sip... this tall, slender glass is much preferred over a rounded wine glass I'd used for previous cans; best expression of hop herbals

F: its apparent level of dryness is about the only thing that harkens back to a German Pils... very delicate, resin-washed swell up front, quickly buzzed out by the hoppy electric current... wonderfully dry but the level carbonation and prickly acidic bite is nearly ideal

O: I've been craving a dry (German-style) pilsner lately but was hoping I could find one in a (NJ) local; this one is damn close to what I sought (though it's more Czech in taste) and it doesn't hurt that I'm also a fan of Perle hops... they did a fine job with this and it'll be on repeat (2394)

 

 

Pale body - with the haze and color of a white ale, though the body de-hazes quite a bit as it warms up. Head builds up to a couple fingers halfway into the pour into a tall glass, and holds steady there all the way to the top. Spongy lacing is more present at the top, with less white bubbles sticking to the glass as I drink this beer down.

Nose is a bit more grainy than bready, but definitely has a noble hop grassy aroma that I am used to getting from American made German-style Pilsners. After a little while, I started the lemon/lime zest in the aromas, taking some of the steam out of the grass note.

There's a light grain note in the open, with a lemon zest edge to it. The middle brings about the grassy note from the nose, itself with an accompanying note on the edges - a generically herbal one. The beer is pretty dry throughout, with a light-plus bitterness that accomplishes the feat of begging another sip shortly after the previous one.

Medium carbonation with a just below average body.
Aroma is cereal and grain with some lemon lime zest.

Pours a hazy straw gold with a moderate head that dissipates slowly to leave a thin film around the top edge of the beer.

Light cereal and grassy hop aromas. Gentle aromas. There might be a hint of lemon peel in there as well.

Taste follows but more strongly. Light bready start with some grassy/floral notes that lead to a lingering finish. A nice long finish on this beer.

The body is medium with a good degree of welcome carbonation.

This is a very nice Pilsner. Another easy to choose daily drinker type of lager that I’d gladly drink again.

Canned in 12oz this year, last year they did 16 oz 4 packs. Easy to drink pilsner with a nice hop bitterness. Tonewood makes tasty lagers and pilsners (in my opinion better than their ales) and is my local buying spot for them.

Pours a lightly cloudy bright golden color. Thin, two finger white sudsy head forms on the beer before quickly dissipating leaving just some splotchy white foam and sudsy lacing. Aroma has notes of sweet white bread, straw, cracker malt and some light honey,giving way to an moderately hoppy finish with notes of herbal hops, some light sweet floral notes and just a light spiciness on the back end.

Taste follows the nose with notes of straw, cracker malts, and some white bread. Light notes of grass, dried straw, floral hops and some mild spiciness follow behind. Its moderately bitter. Feel is light, crisp, easy drinking. Bright carbonation.

Overall it is a very tasty German pilsner. This definitely has some of the dry hopped characteristics of the Italian pilsner style - and I suspect a more enterprising brewery would have called it an Italian pilsner. Nonetheless, this is delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cloudy gold leaning straw, not the clearest beer but it was canned 3 days ago so this may be playing a part here. The head settles quickly but it has a nice cohesive layer of white that stays, it laces very nice as well.

Nose a grassy and spicy hops, cracker like malt, little citrus, nice little herbal note that shows a little more as it warms, gentle fruity note hiding in there as well.

Delicious beer, it is hoppy but just perfectly so for me; grassy and spicy hop and it just coats the mouth, like the nose there is this really neat little fruity like note, which I'd almost describe as pear, malt again shows cracker like.

Mouthfeel, is light, nice pleasant carbonation dry and hoppy finish, with a medium, and again, grassy like bitterness.

This beer is awesome; it drinks incredibly easy and at the same time is perfectly hoppy, that hoppy character adds to this beer instead of detracts, which I think can sometime happen with many hoppy lagers.
