Appearance: Pours a nearly completely black color with hints of a brown hue. A moderate tan head. SRM of 23. (3.75)
Aroma: Mild to moderate aromas of milk chocolate, dry cocoa with minimal roast. There's some light lactose cream that hangs around, but overall dry.
Flavor: Mild flavors of chocolate and roasted black malt upfront. This turns into a dry, grassy flavor. Not really hemp flavors.. Some light cream, but ultimately finishes with a dry and watery, roasted barley and black malt flavor. Slightly smokey. Low carbonation and finishes dry.
Feel: Medium-bodied. Low carbonation. Finishes watery, but also dry. (3.50)
Compared to Bent Paddle's Black Ale 5/2/21: Identical appearance. More roasted barley, black malt, and cream. Less chocolate, roast, and bitterness. Milder, less sweet body. Overall, quite similar.
Overall: Kind of neat that this beer was made with roasted hemp. I guess I was under the impression that it was going to taste like hemp, which was note the case. Probably fortunately so. But the roasted hemp in the recipe drinks similar to roasted barley or black malt. I can detect that flavor here. Nothing too dynamic, other than a light smokiness. Could use a bit more carbonation, but otherwise pretty good. (Final Rating: 3.58)

I'm trying this beer at the brewery. It poured a dark clear mahogany with thin white head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had smoke presence. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with smoke...mint and peat notes. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a decent beer.

The good folks at Pearl Street Brewing in LaCrosse, WI sent me this to sample and evaluate. Pours deep garnet and has garnet flashes in the lower portion of the glass. Nose is no-nonsense toasted hemp, bordering on coffee... quite delightful. Mouthfeel is amazingly spry for a porter, not chewy, velvety or Guinness-ish at all, but imbued with a pleasant carbonation that bathes the tongue. Some chocolate and tart cherry comes through as it warms. That cherry may come from the cherrywood used to smoke the hemp seeds, but wherever it comes from, it’s both unexpected and nice. With its apparently low ABV, it’s definitely not boozy at all and would likely pair well with a host of foods, with the possible exception of very spicy foods and very rich desserts. That a hemp-based beer releases on 4/20 should surprise no one, but, for my money, this should be available yearly. I think my buddy Joe Skelly—a porter connoisseur—would love it.

A - Dark body, mostly solid but with a hint of dark brown transparency on the edges. Head is light tan, which lingers. Lacing is minimal.
S - The strongest note is wet limestone. The smoke sits below, an umami kick that introduces the namesake into play.
T - The flavors emphasize dark toast notes and bacon-like smokiness. A touch of chocolate and bread, with subtle acidic bite in the finish.
M - Some prickliness, but the beer lands on the tongue and coats without full relief.
O - An interesting experiment that is perhaps not my cuppa. The main detractors is the lack of roasted malt notes on the nose and the muddy feel. Something is pretty good here, but I think it does not quite hit the mark.

A solid porter. The flavor is very chocolatey but not too bitter almost like a 70% cocoa chocolate bar and the aftertaste drifts off more into a cocoa and slightly coffee-flavor. Smell is that of a standard porter nothing particularly stands out about it. Feel is smooth and it pours nicely.

I don't usually like beer made with anything smoked. But this one was brewed brilliantly, evidenced by its taste.

This stuff is really tasty! Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a novelty goblet. Coffee-colored pour, with a couple of fingers of tan head that settled pretty quickly leaving a tiny bit of lacing. This has a nice roasted malt character without any hint of burnt or charred coffee bean, as I often pick up in porters and stouts. A little chocolate, a little tart black cherry, and notes of sesame oil (possibly from the toasted hemp seeds used in the brewing process) round out the profile. Bitterness is quite understated. Body is on the lighter side of medium, with a slightly astringent finish. This makes for a wonderful pairing with aged and smoked cheeses. Well done, PSB!

Poured a cola brown color with 1/2 inch light brown head. The aromas were of faint smokiness without the classic BBQ smell you find in smoked beers. The taste is the same, a pleasant earthy smokiness with hints of chocolate and roast coffee beans. Kind of like eating a coffee bean lightly covered in chocolate. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied.
Overall - I like the twist on its earthy and smoky notes. I'm guessing the hemp seed is was lends these characteristics.

It's a super light brown pour that caused concern for a quick second before I saw the body building up a chocolate brown fullness and a nice, fluffy 1/2 finger of head. The head stays like a ring of bubbly coffee all the way to the finish.
Oh, this nose is nice. Rich nutty aromas with some chocolate-coffee and biscotti.
Flavor is hemp forward, following with formidable notes of hazelnut, coffee, chocolate, vanilla...ending on a tremendous coffee breath note that is beyond ridiculous (in a good way).
Feel is the only part that could really improve. A bit thin on the feel, but hey - it's roasty as all get out, so it sort of balances out.
This Smokin' Hemp Porter is fabulous. I wish I woulda grabbed a six in Wisconsin. Very solid, glad I have another to enjoy.
